Signs vs. The Ring

This question seems to be hinted at in many threads so I thought i might as well make a thread aboot it. Which movie do you think was better: The Ring or Signs?

My vote (Like anyone cares) definetley goes to Signs. Although it was more of a thriller/suspensful type movie I enjoyed it a lot more. The Ring did two things to me. It made me laugh (Horse boat scene) and it made me sleep. I dozed in and oot of it because it was painfully boring. The whole movie seemed to be based of the one scene of the girl in the closet (which was admitedly freaky). What do you think?

I love these kind of people. "The Exorcist wasn't scary. It was funny. You wimp. Nothing scares me."

I dont think it's really fair to compare the two as one had the sort of twist ending while the other was just a standard horror film
Spoiler:
Unless you say WATER is a twist...in which case I fear for the sake of the words "twist ending"

I enjoyed both for what they are. I would rather not compare the two because both worked well in what they were doing in themselves, but if you compare them to each other, they don't work the same.

I would definitely say The Ring. I was very disappointed with Signs.

What movies do you find frightening? I'd love to see them.

Onward. Seeing as how The Ring was a straight-forward horror movie (Americanized albeit), and Signs was more of a family drama (...with aliens!), I think it's sort of like comparing Three Kings and ER just because both have George Clooney.

That being said, I ranked The Ring higher on my list this year, although after seeing Signs a second time my opinion rose. Signs was well-crafted and was genuinely touching. The Ring was genuinely creepy. I'll be getting Ring, The and Ringu in March.

Signs was one of my favorites of last year. That said, I vote Signs. I thought The Ring was a solid thriller though.

signs did have a twist ending......the whole time during the movie you are under the impression that the movie is called signs because of the crop circles.....in reality it is called signs becuase the dying wife saw the "signs" of what the family needed to do to survive in the future when the alien invades the house at the very end..............

YES I COULDNT AGREE MORE. I dont feel the ring was a horror movie, more like a drama and thriller towards the middle.

The Ring was great but I have to give Signs the edge here.

I'd vote for Signs as the better film, but The Ring is the creepier movie. Signs is an interesting story with solid acting and great suspenseful pacing. The Ring just creeps me out.

While I haven't seen the American remake of The Ring, ringu is one of my favorite horror films (and I'm waiting oh so patiently for the American translation of the novel), so I vote it above Signs.

Definitely The Ring

I found it genuinely scary/entertaining.

I thought Signs was kinda dumb and the worst of the M. Night movies. It wasn't scary (at least I didn't think so) and the ending was just lame.
Spoiler:
Aliens who have the technology to travel millions of light years, etc. can't open doors, their only apparent "weapon" is "wrist gas", they come to a planet that is 3/4 covered in water and often rains, yet they cannot come into contact with water. And people across the world are running in terror and all the militaries are apparently unable to do anything, when all anybody needed to do was turn on their garden hose. Another thing that pissed me off, M. Night's "cameo" saying "I hear their afraid of water", how the hell do you know?! If this is common knowledge for Joe Schmoe from Iowa (or Indiana, or wherever it was set, I don't remember), then what was the problem in the first place? And do you know how much moisture condensation gets on corn stalks at night? As a native Nebraskan, I can tell you quite a bit. And yet the Aliens run around in the cornfields at night playing tag without being "injured".

I don't at all expect movies to be realistic, they are fantasy, but this one was filled with so many inconsistencies it just became annoying. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

I dont really see Signs and The Ring in the same genre of film. One was meant to be scary and one was a family drama. It's like comparing Casablanca to Jaws - not even close to each other.

That being said, Signs sucked. The Ring made it it's bitch on so many levels it's not funny.

I don't even think there is a comparison. Signs was an overblown snoozefest about faith disguised as a suspense/thriller with an incredible weak ending. The Ring was an entertaining horror film with a great story and an excellent ending.

Signs was just a rehash of things that have done better in previous films. Nearly every scene was an homage to earlier, better films. Even though The Ring was a remake, it still managed to have more originality than Signs and brought some new things to the table to keep it fresh.

I agree that comparing these movies are apples and oranges, but if I had to pick, it would The Ring by a LONG shot.

aww
funny because i haven't really ever found the exorcist scary but i could see how people could find it scary.

also, maybe i didn't find ring scary because ive seen ringu alot (which i didnt find that scary but it creeped me out and had tons of great atmosphere)

signs, on the other hand, i dont see how peopel could think was scary at all, let alone the scariest film they have seen.

anyway, i dont really find movies too scary, especially horror movies. i love horror movies but they are like faerie tales or something to me. they make me feel good not really scared. sometimes creeped out or full of anticipation but not scared.

that being said twin peaks has scared and continues to scare the hell out of me

SPOILERS:
I cant understand how people who find parts of Signs confusing praise The Ring which is one movie that has so many plot holes it hurts.
Spoiler:
Why did the girl in the beginning turn all gross like if just her heart stopped? How did she get in the closet? Why were horses going crazy? Why did copying the tape do anything? How does a tape kill you? Who was on the phone? Some people said the video was really scary. Just watch a 9 inch nails music video, turn down the color and mute the tv and there you have the ring video.

I'm feeling kinda lazy editing your quote so I'll try to answer them in sequence as best I can.

Spoiler:
If you found your daughter like that, would you really tell people that's how she looked like when she died or just tell them that her heart stopped? Anyway, my theory is she looked like what one would look like if they drowned in a deep well and didn't get found for seven days.

Wouldn't you run for your life and try to hide if Samarra stepped out of the TV and was going after you the way they showed her going after Noah?

Horses? Cuz they felt her evil presence? Hasn't it always been the case in movies that animals are more intune to evil than humans? Take "Wolf" with Jack and Michelle for example.

I thought this was explained in the film. If you copy the tape, there's a better chance that someone else would see it, thereby spreading the body count more. And by spreading it around, you're "helping" Samarra with her work so she doesn't kill you.

The tape doesn't kill you. Watching it does. or rather, Samarra does. after 7 days which is how long she survived in the well I think.

I assume it was Samarra on the fone. She's good like that.

The video was...disturbing to say the least.

I don't listen to NiN.

First off, please use spoiler tags.

Second, watch the Ring again. Most of these aren't plot holes and were covered in the film. I don't blame you because a lot of those can be easily overlooked on the first viewing.

For example:

Spoiler:
The girl got all gross from decay, she was in the closet because she tryed to run from Samara. They say she was literally scared to death. Second this isn't something new to horror movies. They all try to make a simple death look much grosser then it really is.

The horses go crazy because they were owned by that one lady who killed Samara. My memory of the film is kinda off, but this was definatly explained in the movie.

The copying of the tape helped because what Samaras "goal" was to spread her word. So if someone saw the video, they had 7 days to copy the tape and show it to someone else to save themselves. And again this isn't a theory, it was stated in the movie.

I don't know who was on the phone, but don't think its really a plot hole either.

If the video was just shown on TV I wouldn't have thought much of it but since it was IN the movie it seemed a whole lot freakier.

Hope that helps, and try watching the movie again to pick up on these

Let's also not forget that The Ring deals with a supernatural force, and Signs deals with scientific beings. With supernatural forces, there's a lot more leeway to do things like decay bodies and making a tape that can kill people. With beings bound by the physical laws of our reality, things like water condensation on crops do become viable criticisms. But to look at a horror film with ghosts and say "I think this obviously supernatural occurance is a plot hole" is like looking at The Wizard of Oz and saying "I think flying monkeys are a plot hole."
