What's so great about "Barbershop"?
Just watched "Barbershop" tonight, can't say I was overly impressed with the film. I'll admit that Cedric the Entertainer stole the show and whoever played the other ATM thief (the thin one) was funny as well. But I just can't see the mass appeal behind this film. To me, it's "Clerks" with African-Americans and a more cliched plot (typical owner tries to buyback his property plot).

I didn't think it was "Citizen Kane" or anything...but as lightweight "pass the time" fare, it beats anything Freddie Prinze Jr. has done.
Ok. Wait. Bad example.
Put it this way...it's a good rental, but I wouldn't run out and buy it for $12.99 [which is what the Wiz was selling it for].
Another plus...Eve is fine.

I know when it was in theaters critics were saying it was a film for people of all races. That may or may not be true but being black I loved it because it shows what it is like in a black barbershop.

The movie was already on it's way out of theaters when Jesse Jackson made his stupid demands that they edit out negative remarks about popular Blacks in history out of the DVD. Now that may have been why MGM released the film on DVD earleir than ususal.

Jesse & Rev Al are idiots.
But at least they're equal opportunity idiots.
I remember hearing them say something like "We'd come out against the movie if it was a bunch of white people that were in it. Just because they're black doesn't mean they get a free pass" [something to that effect]
So, that's something i'd give them props for.
But they're still stupid.

Eve is super fine. I didn't think she looked that great on her album covers, though.
I didn't realize that one of the lines of the movie was "**** Jesse Jackson!"
After hearing that line, the reasons behind Jesse's dislike of the movie became more clear.
I was expecting for the movie to bring the funny a lot more, but it didn't.

Actually, Eddie's (Cedric the Entertainer) rants about the black historical personalities (Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.) were the best part about this film. Eddie's insult to Jesse Jackson was great.

I thought it was "pretty good", not great but certainly not horrible. While I thought the performances were mostly good, I felt that the script and story were somewhat lacking. For some reason it wasn't s funny as I thought it could have been. I was torn as to whether I should've picked up the dvd this past week. I didn't.
Having said that, though, I thought it was a fairly well made little flick.

Where is "The Wiz" selling for 12.99?

I posted this in a previous Barbershop thread:
Saw it in theaters, it's not that good. Ice Cube is great, select moments of dialogue at the Barbershop are golden, but the film is uneaven and too concerned with its plot about Ice losing the shop to the developer (a hackneyed premise if there ever was one). Filmakers need to take a clue from Clerks and realize that audiences don't have to have a core plot to refer back to every ten minutes to get their berings, just make us laugh.
And the guys who stole the ATM weren't funny for one single second of the film.

Who cares what Jesse thinks about the movie!? Hard to take him serious when he now has a love child.
I thought the movie was fun, much like "Car Wash". I didn't think it was anything like Clerks.
