Does anyone actually like Whoopi Goldberg?

There are lots of actresses I dislike, but in most of those I can at least see some valid reasons for liking them. With Whoopi, I just can't find any redeeming qualities in her. I don't know a single person that actually likes her. I don't understand why anyone would actually choose her to be in a movie. She had one hit movie with Sister Act - I don't believe she was really in anything else really memorable (well maybe Ghost, but that wasn't because of her). I couldn't stand her in Star Trek TNG - that was the most baffling casting choice I can think of. Yet she keeps popping up in movie after movie, especially in made for TV movies.

Anyone actually like her?

I'm not fond of her at all, but I think she is more popular among women, and my experience on these boards is that women are a distinct minority. She might be liked by fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Her role in that show wasn't so bad...

She's (usually) one more reason to avoid the Oscars.

You hit the nail on the head - I think she might have said one funny thing the whole time she was hosting...eh, probably not.

Her fame is one of the greatest examples of phoney, studio/management created, hoax-ster, synthesized fame of all time. NO ONE LIKED HER!!! She never had a hit movie that she stared in (only supporting roles like Ghost were hits). She was unfunny in her standup act and she parlayed her "talent" into a string of unfunny comedies and laughable dramas. No one went to her films, no one liked her, yet the buzz surounding her was that she was great and talented and brilliant. No one watched the films they just listened to the hype.

Sister Act was a big hit in which she was the main star.

That said, I am also puzzled as to why she is so famous.

Um ... the exception would be her breakaway performance in The Color Purple. She won the academy award in 1990 for Ghost because she previously lost best actress to Geraldine Page (Trip to the Bountiful) in 1985 (actually I thought Lorraine Bracco deserved it for Goodfellas myself in '90). Worse case of payback in Oscar history if you ask me...

Other than that, the only other movie I enjoyed her in was Soapdish, and I guess that is not a highly regarded comedy by anyone but me... I laugh my a$$ off every time!

She gave an amazing performance in The Color Purple. However, since then I haven't been impressed with much else she's done.

I Love Whoopi. Is that the answer you were looking for.
She has done some crappy movies but I loved in The Color Purple and Ghost and on TNG.
Surely you can pick someone else more deserving of the title like Mahtthew Lawrence.

Look...

Whoopi is GREAT in roles where she plays a normal black woman. When she's playing "kooky weirdos" then she's very annoying.

HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK
THE COLOR PURPLE

But her acting is very good and like it or not she'll be around for some time.

I think she's terrific. Not too great at hosting the Oscars, where her jokes have seemed stale and obvious, but otherwise extremely likeable, and enjoyable in nearly anything.

She was good in The Player and Soapdish, two "ensemble cast" movies which should give you an indication what direction she should move in.

I personally can't stand her, did anyone ever see that movie where she was a cop or something with a partner that was a dinosaur, I even bothered to look it up Theodore Rex

Tagline: The world's toughest cop is getting a brand new partner. He's a real blast from the past.

...I didn't either

The Color Purple, Ghost, and episodes of Star Trek: TNG are the only pieces of entertainment in which I thought Whoopi was good.

I just looked her up on IMDB and she's done 157 movies! Looking through the list, I've never heard of barely any of them.
http://us.imdb.com/Name?Goldberg,+Whoopi

Let's examine some of these.
You'll Never Wiez in This Town Again (2002) .... Herself
I can tell by the name this is gonna be stupid, so I read the plot outline: "Hollywood's Pauly Shore loses everything, fakes his own death, and gets caught!". OMG THATS AN OSCAR CONTENDER RIGHT THERE!!!

Baby Geniuses 2: Superbabies (2003) .... Herself
A sequel to what many said was the WORST MOVIE OF 1999. Yeah, this will be a real winner! But maybe I'm too harsh on this one. I mean, it does co-star Scott Baio after all.

Whoopi - the official mascot of Flooz and the poster-woman for overexposure.

I can't stand Whoopi either. Whenever I see her, all I can think about is the fact that she doesn't have eyebrows. For some reason that freaks me out.

No love for Theodore Rex?

The scary thing is, and I've only heard this as a rumor so it might be complete BS, but I had once read how Daulton wanted her to be cast in the 1991 Bond film. Of course the Bond franchise hit a legal snag, and no film was made in 1991, but the thought of Whoopi Goldberg and Bond Girl is downright frightening.
