How do such bad movies make over 100 million aka MIb2 @ Mummy2

I love sequels but so many of them are crap. I just want to know how does movies like MIB2 and Mummy2 make close to 200million dollars. After watching MIB2 i think that might be one of the worst movies ever made.

I thought MIB2 was pretty good. Not as good as the first, but still enjoyable. Most people I know are indifferent, but a few I know also liked it pretty well. I don't know anybody that thought it was better than the first, tho. But to say that it is the worst movie ever....wow....I can think of so many more that fit in that category.

As to why they make so much money.....maybe audiences don't feel the same way about them as you do? That's a concept...

Could be on to something there...but there are truly bad sequels that tanked. Nemesis is the most recent example of that.

Nemesis isn't that bad. But it won't even make as much money as ST5 did. That's disturbing. Paramount chose a really poor time to release the film, just days before The Two Towers. They just couldn't compete for that almighty geek dollar.

Hey! The Mummy Returns was good! MIIB and the scorpion king stank!

Nowadays, I think people'll see anything those days. I saw MIIB in the theaters and hated it but I already paid my $$ for it, so there's nothing I can do about it. I think people will soon see that most sequels have become crap and will not evn bother to see it in the theaters.

When I was in the theaters watching TTT, the trailer for the Dumb and Dumber prquel came up. And a bunch of kids were just cracking up. I was like "They haven't even shown the trailer, and you find that F. Brothers intro bit funny?!!!" I refuse to see that prequel.

I liked The Mummy 2, MIB2 and Scooby Doo!

The majority of the public just want to watch something that might be entertaining, including me.

You're not going to know it's horrible until you actually watch the movie.

I liked MIB2 & The Mummy 2 - they were just popcorn movies which a lot of people enjoy. Most people just want to park their brains at the door for two hours and movies like that provide that service. I have no excuse for Scooby-Doo I didn't go anywhere near it. Nemesis was not released at a good time (oen week before Two Towers, hello Paramount what were you thinking). It probably would have tanked anyway but who knows.

As George Carlin said: "Think about the average person, how stupid they are, and realize that half of the people are stupider than than."

Is someone forgetting Battlefield Earth? I have to agree with others. MIB2, not as good as the first one but not as horrible as some feel it is. It was 80 minutes of brain candy, pure sugar, no substance.

By the way, I fully own up to my shallowness. I like brainless action popcorn movies. People like me with kids who ask to see them are the reason they make money.

One thing to look at is how much money does the movie make after opening weekend? I think the biggest reason sequels like these make so much money is they're hyped to death beforehand. The marketing gets everyone in a frenzy to go see it, then come opening weekend they've made half of their final box office already.

I think MIB2 made almost $100M opening weekend, then dropped around -40% every weekend after that. I don’t think it broke $200M domestically, but I may be wrong.

Mission Impossible: 2 had the fact that John Woo directed it helping it out. That's the reason I saw it; I won't make that mistake again.

Well bad news for you, there will be a sequel called Battlefield Earth 2 that finishes the book.

That has to do more with the money those Scientologists have to throw around than how well the general public recieved the first movie. I say, whatever, let the Scientologists have their movies, that doesn't mean I have to see them.

Hype sells but it can only take you so far.

MIIB, Mummy Returns, Goldmember, and many of these big sequels manage to make over 100 million because of aggressive marketing campaigns. Nowadays any film that has this much hype is guaranteed to make $100 million regardless of how bad word-of-mouth is. Whereas My Big Fat Greek Wedding had zero hype yet averaged about $5 to $9 million a week for 11 months resulting in a gross higher than the films mentioned above.

Just wanted to point out this wise nugget - which apparently everyone here is too intelligent to accept as a truth.

I must either be dumb or simply "below average" because I actually liked Scooby Doo.

Why do they make them? The name of the movie is already known from the first one so folks will see it on that ground alone. Second, they make major bank internationally, third reason is because video rentals alone and direct sales of merchindise, and tie ins are worth a fortune to a studio.

It is easy to make money back.

$. That's why Hollywood continues to focus on making crappy, CGI infested, dumbed down, PG-13 sequels than actually doing something original or that contains an actual plot. Just my humble opinion.

With that said, aside from the horrendous CGI and the annoying kid, I didn't think The Mummy Returns was all that bad. MIB2 and MI2 are another story altogether.

I liked both of those movies too. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean everyone else agrees with you. Some of my friends could care less about LOTR but it makes over 300 million. I don't care much for the Star Wars prequels but those also bring in the bucks.
