"DEVDAS" is Year's No. 1 film, says TIME Magazine

"Devdas" from India, this year's official Indian entry to the Oscars, is the year's best film, beating out 'Gangs of New York', 'Spirited Away', 'Minority Report', and 'The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers'.

Time Magazine hailed the film as the No. 1 film of 2002 in their list just released to media.

Official report :

The 2-DVD collector's edition of the 'Devdas' DVD is already on sale in the US from http://www.indiaweekly.com and http://www.nehaflix.com

Yes it IS that good. The initial USP that got crowds in was the presence of Aishwarya Rai, often considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, but the music, story, cinematography, they are all excellent. The climax is truly heart-wrenching. Watch out when the Oscar noms are announced soon.

Be warned though that the DVD is the unrated extended edition which means that its over three hours long.

Well, now wait a moment -- this is the Time European edition list, which is different than the American Time edition's list by Richard Schickel, which was:

1. Talk To Her
2. About Schmidt
3. Far From Heaven
4. Road To Perdition
5. Monsoon Wedding
6. About A Boy
7. Italian for Beginners
8. The Pianist
9. 8 Mile
10. Safe Conduct

Not that I'm saying anything one way or another about the merits of either list. Just figure we ought to be clear about this, because Time does put out several different editions worldwide....

Did he like so much he listed it twice? (Actually #5 on his list is Monsoon Wedding.)

When I saw the thread title, I frantically tried to figure what movie "DEVDAS" was an acronym for.

I didn't think it was nearly as good as:

Yes and No.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not used to Bollywood.
