8mm

I finally saw 8mm for the first time. What a depressing movie! I mean the movie was incredibly well made, I really did not expect it to be as good as it was. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but this movie was very good and like Joaquin Phoenix's character said in the movie, "There are images that you see and you can't get them out of your head" or something like that. Still thinking about that movie now and it frightens me.

I was one of the only ones who saw this film when it came out.

I loved it. A lot of people didn't.

Nicolas Cage was his usual post-Leaving Las Vegas self, but everyone else was excellent.

I also enjoyed the storyline, to a certain degree.

Yeah this was a great but completely depressing movie. It is sick and twisted. And that's why i love it.Cage and Phoenix were great in this one.So was James Gandolfini. But i definitely don't recommend this movie to someone who is looking for a happy and joyful time. This is a real downer.

I may have to give this another chance.I have'nt seen it since in theaters & had mixed feelings about it.

Though i do remember my Dad picking out the movie since he loves Nick Cage, only to all be really disgusted & feel dirty when it was over.He complained & tryed blaming me for picking the film by saying "Thats the last time i ever let you pick a movie!"..so i made him see that it was he who picked it out,not me

One interesting note on just how dark(literally) the film is.The brightest scene in the film is when Cage
Spoiler:
sets that guy on fire. The theater lit up & i could actually see the people in the rows in front of me,when before it was pitch black

I've heard that the film was orignally NC-17 & had alot cut out.Does anyone know for sure just what was cut? May make a interesting unrated version.

Not to be a naysayer... but... every thread's required to have one.

I think this film is a load of exploitative crapola that becomes exactly what it's (for the lack of a better term) condemning...

Joel "Suckmaker" strikes again.

There's no intelligence... when the film should be a dark morality tale, 8mm slides into the role of substandard action film. Suckmaker confuses a dark theme with dark lighting. Dimming the lights on a dumb movie still makes it a dumb movie, Joel.

I used this film in a class presentation on the the MPAA's de facto censorship of the Hollywood film industry as an example of a film that should have been censored out of existence... not really... actually I highlighted its use of gratuitous violence and compared what was allowed to for its R-rating versus what was cut from American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream.

I might be in the minority here, but I was not impressed with this film at all. The plot sounds very promising, but was a huge let-down, IMO. Cage was fine - as were all the other players. I just didn't care for how the story evolved.
