What is the best Daniel Day Lewis movie?

I know I'm really jumping on the bandwagon here, but I though Daniel Day Lewis is completely amazing in GONY. I'm sure he has shown his amazing acting ability in other movies as well. Can you recommend some? (other than Mohicans, which I love) Thanks.

The Crucible is, I think, very underrated. While Day-Lewis is great, Joan Allen's magnificent performance is even better. She deserved the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award that went to Juliette Binoche.

The unbearable Lightness of Being is one of my favorite films so i have to recommend that, but he did win an oscar for his role in My Left Foot which is also amazing.

Daniel Day is the personification of a truly ferocious actor who defines Method combined with an affinity for reinvention. I was glad to see my favorite New York Director get him out of his self-imposed semi-retirement and burning up the screen once again. My contribution to this list as far as contrasts character wise would be My Left Foot and A Room With A View.

But this guy doesn't make bad movies. DD Lewis is one of the most ferociuos, impassioned actors in this day and age. Him and Gary Oldman.

Daniel Day-Lewis is such a force, that he's tremendous in all of films, even in some of the earlier ones, which were not as well received. Everyone has offered good suggestions so far, so I'll name one of my most favorite Martin Scorsese films, The Age of Innocence.

It might not showcase his acting talent, but I throughly enjoyed Last of the Mohicans.

I haven't seen most of his movies, but I'd say Last of the Mohicans.

My favorite is probably Unbearable Lightness of Being, but pretty much all of them listed. Although Gandhi hardly counts.

Most of the ones not listed too--one I liked (although it was really weird which may partially account for its low ratings) is Eversmile New Jersey, the story of a crusading dentist and his quest to end tooth decay in rural Argentina. It's not the best, but it's realy odd, so it's well worth seeing.

Reading through the responses here, I want to agree with everyone. He has been in some terrific movies, and has always been an astouding actor.

My personal recommendations would be either .. Last Of The Mohicans ... or for a more up-close performance .. The Boxer.

btw .. for anyone who was impressed with Unbearable Lightness, I would really recommend that you read the book. You'll be blown away. It was the best movie adaptation they could've made of that complex and rich material, but the movie doesn't touch the book. (And yes, I loved the movie.)

I'll cast my vote for The Unbearable Lightness of Being also. My second choice would be My Left Foot. I wish the Academy Awards still had a children's Oscar so that kid in My Left Foot would have won one also.

Gangs of New York, no question. Day Lewis' performance in that is not only a personal best, but is about as good as it gets from any actor. A near second would be his other Scorsese collaboration, Age of Innocence, a very different New York story where he is as internal as Bill the Butcher is gloriously excessive.
