Explain Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man to me please.
Okay. You must think me an idiot. I probably am. But I never try to analyze songs. Ever. But I do want to know what this song is refering to? Dreams? Destiny?
HELP!
I first heard this song when I saw L.I.E. (great film btw) and I found the beat and how Donovan sings to be excellent.
-----------------------------------------------------
Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I open my eyes to take a peep
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquillity.
'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Histories of ages past
Unenlightened shadows cast
Down through all eternity
The crying of humanity.
'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy
gurdy.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Here comes the roly poly man and he's singing songs of
love,
Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly, poly he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang,
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang?

Great song, a classic. The L.I.E. trailer really caught my attention too.
I wouldn't bother racking your brains about it even though it's very haunting. I sincerely think that particularly in the psychedelic era, songwriters would just act as 'vehicles' for some aspect of their 'consciousness' that even they couldn't fully explain in a rational way.
Your interpretations are probably as valid as anyone's, even Donovan's. And based on the mood of the music and the sparse but effective lyrics, I just get an 'apocalyptic' feeling from the song and leave it at that.
