Although it's not a popular choice among my circle of friends, my favorite Fugazi album is "In On the Kill Taker." It mostly showcases the more chaotic, noisy side of Fugazi, and happens to contain two of my favorite Fugazi tunes (Cassavetes and Smallpox Champion). "Red Medicine" is a close second thanks to a nice blend of the earlier more straightforward style and a willingness to incorporate new sounds. "Instrument" is my least favorite Fugazi release, but there are a few songs that may make it worth your time.

I'm not sure how old you want your "older punk" to be, but (former) Fugazi labelmates Jawbox are certainly worth checking out.

Gang of Four is often mentioned as a big influence on Fugazi (and they also happen to be a great band).

My favorite Fugazi CD is "Repeater". "13 Songs" is also a great CD. Both of these are earlier recordings.... I have not heard their last two to be honest. But I'd be surprised if they'd do better than these two.

There are previous threads where everyone talks about fave punk. Gang of Four's "Entertainment" CD is excellent. Also, if you want to hear something really really cool, seek out "Pink Flag" by Wire.

I agree with Mike, In On the Kill Taker is just fantastic. This was the first Fugazi album I bought. Personally, I don't think there is a weak track on the album. Mike is right in that it does show Fugazi mostly rocking, but there are a few quieter tracks also. Repeater is also great.

As far as old school punk goes, there is so much great stuff out there: The Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Wire, Dead Kennedys, X, Black Flag, The Damned, Husker Du, The Jam & Television. I'm sure I missed some big groups but that would give you a pretty good start.

I also like "In On the Kill Taker" the most. Cassavetes, especially.

The only Fugazi album I have is 13 Songs. I'm not too much into them. Although I do love "Waiting Room" and "Margin Walker" off that album.

Here's a few punk albums I would recommend:

Angry Samoans - the unboxed set
Minor Threat - Complete Discography
Suicidal Tendencies - self titled
Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bullocks
Black Flag - Slip It In
Dead Kenndys - Fresh Fruit For Rotten Vegetables
Agent Orange - Living In Darkness
The Replacements - Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash

I need to pick up 13 songs. I have the tape, and played the hell out of it for years, especially "Waiting Room" but don't have access to a cassette player anymore.

If you like the "california/LA" punk, Bad Religion would be a good band to check out.

Generator, Against the Grain, No Control, Recipe for Hate, and the Process of Belief are all killer. All Ages is a great best of thing that would be a good choice for someone new to them. They have another collection of their real early stuff called "80-85" that's cool if you like real raw punk. It lacks the polish of their Against the Grain and later work, and as such I don't like it as much. Also avoid the albums when Mr. Brett wasn't in the band, I believe these are No Substance and The New America. They suck. The Gray Race isn't so hot either, but I can't remember if Mr. Brett was still with them then.
