Elvis tops album charts
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) --A collection of Elvis Presley's No. 1 hits shot straight to the top of the charts this week, showing the King of Rock 'n Rock still rules even 25 years after his death.
For the week ended September 29, Presley's "Elvis 30 Number One Hits" compilation, released by Bertelsmann AG's RCA Records on September 24, sold 500,318 units, according to Nielsen Soundscan, marking the first time an Elvis album has debuted at No. 1 in the United States.
With the help of a $10 million massive, global marketing and promotion campaign by RCA and its parent BMG, the collection, featuring songs like "Don't Be Cruel," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Return to Sender" also debuted at No. 1 in Spain, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Chile, Switzerland, Austria and the United Arab Emirates.
"Elvis-mania" took hold this summer as thousands of fans paid homage to the King on the 25th anniversary of his death and grooved to a hot-selling new remix of the song, "A Little Less Conversation," which is also on the new CD.
"It is clear that our campaign has been effective in reaching a huge range of music fans in every corner of the globe," said Joe DiMuro, senior vice president, Strategic Marketing for BMG, the parent company of RCA.
Geoff Mayfield, director of charts for Billboard, said that RCA was inspired by the success of rival EMI Group Plc Capitol's compilation of No. 1 hits by the Beatles a few years ago.
On the latest pop album chart, country trio Dixie Chicks' latest album, "Home," held at to No. 2 with sales of 133,845 copies, bringing its five-week tally to more than 1.6 million units.
Canadian teen pop ingenue Avril Lavigne's debut album remained at No. 3 with sales of 124,308 copies in the latest week.
Meanwhile, heavy metal band Disturbed slipped from No. 1 to No. 4 with its sophomore release "Believe," selling 117,809 units, and bringing its total to about 402,038 units.
Rounding out the top five was rapper Nelly's "Nellyville" release, which sold 114,296 units in the latest week.
A new release by rock and soul artist India.Arie called "Voyage to India" landed at No. 6, selling 109,481 units, followed by Eminem's third major-label LP, "The Eminem Show," which has spent 19 weeks lodged in the upper echelons of the pop charts.
"Nellyville" and "The Eminem Show" have chalked up respective sales tallies of 3.5 million and 5.9 million copies.
Three new releases rounded out the top 10, with "Sea Change" by alternative rocker Beck at No. 8; "Up" by Peter Gabriel, former frontman of the 1970s band Genesis, at No. 9 and "Lost Tapes" by rapper Nas at No. 10.

ELV1S #1 for the second week!
Rolling Stones, Xzibit, & American Idol Debut In Top 5 - Oct 9, 2002, 9:40 am PT
Elvis Presley fans are still rushing to the record store to pick up Elvis 30 #1 Hits, as the greatest hits album sells another 336,662 this week to stay at No. 1 on The Billboard 200.
Presley's hold on the top prohibited the Rolling Stones' greatest hits, Forty Licks, from debuting at the summit -- the album comes in at No. 2 instead. Rapper Xzibit is right behind at No. 3 with Man Vs. Machine, the American Idol compilation is up next at No. 4, while rockers Good Charlotte proved hard work does pay off as The Young & the Hopeless debuts at No. 7.
A few more acts made it into the top 20 of the chart -– country star turned pop hopeful LeAnn Rimes bows at No. 12 with Twisted Angel, jazz singer Diana Krall's Live in Paris debuts at No. 18, and Floetry's debut Floetic comes in at No. 19.
Other notable debuts include Mark Knopfler, Ragpicker's Dream, No. 38; Mercy Me, Spoken For, No. 41; Sting and the Police, The Very Best of Sting and the Police, No. 46; 3rd Storee, Get with Me, No. 91; and Russell Watson, Encore, No. 127.

Could you Elvis fans, could you explain to an idiot like me? Why is Elvis that good? IMHO his songs sound average to any other oldies like the Beatles or Sinatra..... I just don't see why there are fan that are so loyal that they still believe he's still alive.

They're great Rock & Roll songs, pure & simple. The heavy marketing and low price help sales a lot, I think. Unlike the Beatles or Stones, Elvis was a singles artist, not albums, so this collection is, very likely, the "only Elvis album you'll ever need". On top of all that, the album sounds just AMAZING. I have never heard these songs so clear and sharp.
I'm not about to convince you of Elvis' greatness; if you get it, you get it ,if not, you don't. Still, I have a hard time comprehending how any sane person can sit down and listen to Heartbreak Hotel or Suspicious Minds and come away with the impression of "average".

John Lennon put it best: "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Obviously Elvis was influenced by many black and white singers (he always admitted as much) but he popularized about 95% of what we consider "pop music" today. I can't really even imagine what today's sound would be like without the impact he made on it.

Long overdue #1. Best $9.93 I've spent in awhile.
