Grammy Eligibility

What is the time period during which an album must be released to get Grammy consideration? I only ask because many times an album doesn't win until what seems like two years since its release date.

Take the O Brother, Where Arth Thou soundtrack. Released in December of 2000, but didn't win the Grammy until February of 2002.

Yeah, I thought Oct 1st was the cut off. It's right around there. That's why the U2 song "Beautiful Day" won the grammy in 2001 and the song "Walk On" won in 2002, because they were released on different sides of that October cut-off.
