Will remastering cd's from 10 years ago make a difference?
Just asking because there are some artists remastering cd's that came out 10 years or less ago, like The Cranberries or Selena. Will there be that much of a sound difference in the cd's?

I'd say it depends on how bad they were originally. For the most part, by the early 90's, studios had figured out how to master cd's so they didn't sound thin and compressed (listen to many cds released around 1984-1986, and you're likely going to hear many that sound this way)

Depends on the quality of the original mastering. If the money was spent years ago on a top pro like George Marino or Bob Ludwig, then I'd say that the remaster is just a way to milk the public out of more money.
However if the original mastering job was substandard (often the case when the recording costs go over budget), then a new mastering can make the album sound much better. Today's high end mastering software (like Sonic Solutions) can work wonders in the hands of a skilled user.

I dunno, I do think this "remastering/special edition" trend in CDs is kind of getting out of hand -- I don't know about you, but I'm not going to re-buy every CD in my collection when they remaster it and stick 2 new demo tracks on there unless it's a truly great production. I have bought the first solo CD by Peter Gabriel which was remastered and repackaged and there's a BIG difference from the murky, faint sound of the first CD from '88 or so -- but that was a rare exception for me. I also bought the "remastered" Ramones debut CD but as I hadn't had the original CD, only a battered cassette, felt like that was a "sound" investment.

I already got The Cranberries box set. As for Selena, I just may stick with the original cd's because I just think they are just trying to milk the fans. I mean, they are also gonna release another Selena GH cd this month and they have already released many before.

I'm still waiting for the Bob Dylan catalog to be remastered. Come on Columbia, hook me up!
And if the Stones are getting the remaster treatment, then I say the Beatles should as well. But that probably won't happen for a long long long time.

I'm done with buying remastered cds. When they start releasing them in Dvd-A or SACD, or somthing with DTS, then I'll start replacing some of my cds.
Until then, they aren't getting my money again for something that should have been done better the first time.

Seriously, I was thinking of this exact same question a few days ago because I ordered Mary Prankster's first album (they're a local Baltimore band), which has recently been remastered - I never picked it up when it first came out. It hasn't come in yet, so I'm not sure how it sounds. I'm sure the initial recording budget was small - so maybe remastering would benefit it.

I am waiting for the "Slanted and Enchanted" remastered. Hopefully I can hear the lyrics better when that comes out soon. Plus that remastered disc has a total of 50 tracks on two discs which is a complete overflow from the original Pavement album so it is well worth it plus Matador said the retail should only be $14.99 or less so rock out.
