Reports that the release has been bumped back a week. New Date:October 22, 2002

Full title: Symptom Of The Universe: The Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978).
What is this that stands before you? Warner Bros. Records/Rhino Entertainment is set to unleash one of the heaviest collections to emerge this or any other year...a mighty anthology that attests to the long-standing influence of the Iron Men of hard rock -- Black Sabbath!
Executive-produced by Sharon Osbourne, SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE: THE ORIGINAL BLACK SABBATH (1970-1978) gathers and remasters 29 classic songs clocking in at more than 150 minutes created by the first -- and most successful-- incarnation of the Birmingham, England-bred band: vocalist John "Ozzy" Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Terry "Geezer" Butler, and drummer Bill Ward.
SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE spans eight Black Sabbath studio albums -- from their self-titled debut of 1970 (an album recorded in under 12 hours!), to their final studio long-player to feature Osbourne's vocals, 1978's Never Say Die! The two-CD package will be available October 15
Featuring a detailed history by Mick Wall (author of Paranoid: Black Days With Sabbath & Other Horror Stories), SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE: THE ORIGINAL BLACK SABBATH (1970-1978) includes the essentials -- "Black Sabbath," "Paranoid," "Iron Man," "War Pigs," "Sweet Leaf," "Snowblind," and "Hole In The Sky." But also included are such noteworthy album tracks as "Sabbra Cadabra" and "Into the Void," as well as their rare cover of "Evil Woman," which was only included on the British album version of 1970's Black Sabbath.
Long before The Osbournes reality-TV show made him and wife/manager Sharon the nation's new "Ozzie & Harriet," Osbourne was the plaintive, compelling voice of Black Sabbath. The four-piece band created massive slabs of vinyl that the late-'60s and '70s rock generation were drawn towards like moths to a flame -- Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, and Black Sabbath, Vol.4 were totems of anti-flower-power sentiment that nevertheless decried the horrors of Vietnam and governmental hypocrisy. By the mid-'70s, Black Sabbath were stadium-sized monsters in the USA, Europe, and beyond, unleashing such titanic platters of doom as Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die!
Since Black Sabbath are still entrancing new generations of hard rock and heavy metal fans each year -- they are one of the only '60s bands regularly played alongside new artists on Modern and Active Rock radio -- SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE may provide inspiration for more of the literally hundreds of rock bands to follow in their wake. With his successful OZZfest summer tours, Ozzy Osbourne continues to play these songs as part of his concerts, and brings down the house with them every time.
Includes the 16 tracks that was on We Sold Our Soul For Rock & Roll + 13 more.

Sabbath is not well-represented by a "best of", though it is nice to see "Evil Woman" on there. Now, will we ever see "The Rebel" or "Song for Jim"? My bootleg's going on 16 years and won't hold up much longer...

Back in 1968 a band called Polka Tulk Blues Band changed its name to Earth, and then to Black Sabbath. They released their self-titled debut album in 1970, giving birth to a new era of rock n' roll. Many of today’s top metal bands claim Sabbath as their chief influence, and without a doubt Black Sabbath has established itself as THE heavy metal icon of the 20th Century. Now a Czech String Quartet has given us the most amazing performance in great respect to what Sabbath is all about. These performances are intense! From the haunting and beautiful “Changes” to the now-legendary “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” this album is chock-full of the best stuff from Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne years. Of course, they included tracks from ‘Master of Reality,’ arguably the best metal album of the 70’s with the epic “Paranoid,” the sonic bliss of “Into the Void,” and a phenomenal version of “Solitude,” (the very first Sabbath love song.) An absolute must for all Sabbath-experienced listeners.

Where is Johnny Blade on this compilation?

shame it only has original line up stuff, I love Ozzy and all, but Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules were by far the best Sabbath albums.

I actually really like the Born Again album - terrible mix but Gillan was pretty good on this one. Hopefully Rhino come out with another set that is post original lineup.

Small comfort, turborobb, but the last "Best of" released just a couple of years ago had a few tracks from the Gillan and Dio eras. It is may be cheaper than the new one (even on import from the UK)

"Johnny Blade," good call.
I was actually thinking of that one and "Back Street Kids," both of which really should have been on this collection.
But my favorite Sabbath era is the Dio era anyway. I'd love to see a post-Ozzy compilation put out on a 2 CD set - it would be a great way to introduce that material to some fans, both older and younger, to some great material.
Let's see....
Disc 1.
1. Neon Knights
2. Children Of The Sea
3. Lady Evil
4. Heaven and Hell
5. Turn Up The Night
6. Voodoo
7. E5150/Mob Rules (my favorite Sabbath song)
8. Slipping Away
9. Trashed
10. The Dark/Zero The Hero
11. Digital Bitch
12. Hot Line
13. Turn To Stone
14. Seventh Star
Disc 2.
1. The Shining
2. Hard Life To Love
3. Glory Ride
4. Headless Cross
5. When Death Calls
6. Anno Mundi
7. Odin's Court/Valhalla
8. Time Machine
9. I
10. Psychophobia
11. I Witness
12. Evil Eye
13. Cardinal Sin
14. Shaking Off The Chains
Now THAT would be a cool Sabbath compilation.

Interview

Can You imagine what Black Sabbath would have sounded like if Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward would have formed the band in the 14th century? Would “War Pigs” or “The Wizard” have been as powerful if played on medieval instruments like lute, fiddle and harp?
Curious? So was Rondellus, the renowned Estonian medieval music band. They took 12 Black Sabbath classics and turned them into something totally unheard.
You don’t have to take history lessons to get the feeling. It’s all on the the new CD Rondellus recorded – “Sabbatum”. An amazing collection of Black Sabbath tunes played on medieval instruments and sung in Latin language.
“Sabbatum” – the most unique sounding Black Sabbath tribute album.
You’ve probably heard all the Black Sabbath cover albums. Perhaps both “Nativity in Black” compilations are in Your CD box right now. Great records, aren’t they?
But “Sabbatum” takes a closer look at all these classic Black Sabbath songs in a way it’s never been done before. The angle is so differrent that You better prepare Yourself for a big surprise, a positively shocking one.
“Sabbatum” takes You on a trip. It acts like a time machine. In a single moment You will find Yourself attending a Black Sabbath show during the 14th century. You will be in a medieval cathedral where time stands still. Just You and thousands of fellow kings and queens, knights and ladies. And the tunes that made heavy metal – classic songs by Black Sabbath.

But I've read some mixed reviews on Black Sabbath castle remasters. Can't locate the link now, but it seems some title remasters have some flaws one way or the other.

I have all the Sabbath albums on CD... so a "best of" collection is kind of pointless for me.
The first 3 or 4 with Ozzy are classics but the later Ozzy albums are rather weak, IMO. My favorite post Ozzy Sabbath albums are all the Dio ones... Heaven and Hell being my favorite... and Headless Cross I think is one of the best Metal labums ever... weather or not you think it's real "Sabbath" or not... it's a great metal album in it's own right.
