Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion albums
Hard to believe its been over ten years since they were released. I remember the day they came out I was too young to get them myself, so "Santa" brought them to me for XMas. (Santa apparently didn't mind the nasty lyrics.)
For the few months they were out before Christmas, I really wanted them more than anything but I couldn't get them.
Anyway, I got them as a gift and was happy with them since everyone at my age was looke up to who had them., Problem is, I never actually owned them for the music, just a trendy thing. Then when I was still an undergrad. in college and went on a Christian Fundamentalist kick, I sold them. Anyway, I now want them back! I didn't ralize until the past two years that G N R did some really kick a$$ music and realize what a fool I was for selling them. A good inidcation of whether or not albums are good is when a store buys one title and neglects your Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer albums.
Actually, I was thinking of just getting someone to burn a compilation album offline for me and was wondering which songs from their three prominent albums (one being Appetite for Destruction) would be according to you old school fans.
Out of curiousity, when it came out, did you actually get them on seperate occasions? Everyone I knew got them as a set.

Appetite: Jungle, It's So Easy, Brownstone, Paradise, Sweet Child, Rocket Queen.
Illusion I: Live and Let Die, Don't Cry, Perfect Crime, Double Talkin' Jive, November Rain, Coma
Illusion II: Civil War, Yesterdays, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Estranged, You Could Be Mine, and then either Locomotive or Breakdown (flip a coin)
Try to fit Patience from Lies in there, and if you can find the demo version of Don't Cry, you might use that instead of the Illusion I version (I always liked the demo version better, anyway). And like someone else said in the other thread, the live version of KOHD from the Ritz in 1988 is much better than the Illusion II version.
Out of curiousity, when it came out, did you actually get them on seperate occasions? Everyone I knew got them as a set.
Wound up buying like three sets--a set of cassettes for me (didn't have a CD player yet), and two sets each of the CDs for buddies at school who weren't able to go. Gave them to them that morning at school. Good times.

I wasn't old enough and my parents weren't about to get them for me initially. It wasn't until they read a bunch of good reviews saying it was good music despite foul language and innuendos that they gave in and bought them. They always were anxious to develop my artistic mind.

I bought both the "Illusions" the week it came out, 'cause the idea of Guns 'N Roses releasing two epic albums intrigued me (that, and I dug their You Could Be Mine/Civil War single). Plus, I really enjoyed "Appetitie" (not so much "Lies"). I thought they were both pretty good, but felt (as is the case with a lot of double albums) that there was too much filler to justify two albums. If they had only included the best from both on one record, then there's no doubt in my mind it would've been their finest hour.

I also bought them at a midnight release party, back when I was in college. Ozzy's classic "No More Tears" album also came out that week, so I picked that one up as well. That was a great summer/fall for new albums: Rush, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Metallica, My Bloody Valentine and others all released classic albums (with the exception of Rush; "Roll The Bones" was pretty good but definitely not a classic!).
I rarely listen to the Illusion albums these days, but they both feature some amazing music. In retrospect I think GnR would have been better off not releasing the albums simultaneously; it was just too much music to absorb at one time.

I remember liking Guns and Roses around the time November Rain was popular, I was really young then so I didn't know much about them. My sister had both Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 on tape and I used to listen to them a lot. Then I kinda got out of it then around a year or so I rediscovered them. I d/led a few songs then ran out and bought, UYI 1 and 2 and Apetite For Destruction. All three are excellent albums IMO.

Guns and Roses compilation?
If I had to pick 18 Guns and Roses songs, these are the ones I'd pick. These are in no particular order, except where noted.
1.) Patience (best song they ever did, in my opinion)
2.) Night Train (best song to drive to)
3.) Welcome to the Jungle
4.) Mr. Brownstone
5.) Paradise City
6.) Sweet Child of Mine
7.) Live and Let Die
8.) Don't Cry (original)
9.) November Rain
10.) Coma
11.) Double Talkin' Jive (I know in the other thread, I rated this as average, I'd like to switch it with Perfect Crime after listening for a few days)
12.) Rocket Queen (best song that was never released as a single)
13.) Civil War
14.) Yesterdays
15.) Knockin' on Heaven's Door
16.) So Fine
17.) Right Next Door to Hell (this could be exchanged for a "didn't make the cut" on the right day)
18.) Estranged (this one could be exchanged as well)
Songs that almost made the cut:
It's So Easy
My Michelle
Hair of the Dog (only thing worth anything on Spaghetti Incident)
Breakdown
Locomotive
You Could Be Mine

My "Best of GNR" compilation:
1) Welcome to the Jungle
2) It's So Easy
3) Nightrain
4) Out Ta Get Me
5) Mr Brownstone
6) Paradise City
7) Sweet Child O'Mine
8) One in a Million
9) Patience
10) Used to Love Her
11) Don't Cry (Original)
12) Live and Let Die
13) November Rain
14) The Garden
15) Civil War
16) Knockin On Heaven's Door
17) Pretty Tied Up
18) You Could Be Mine
19) Don't Cry (Alt Lyrics)
20) Since I Don't Have You
Left the first side of "Appetite" intact because it just kicks @$$, no two ways about it. It's almost a single song, the whole thing just works so well. Tossed "Sweet Child" in there, too, the only song from side two I've included. (I have two copies of the record and no CD of it, one with the original banned cover, the other with the skulls/cross.)
And, by the way, you just HAVE to open any "Best of GNR" album with "Welcome to the Jungle."
I liked "Lies" quite a bit. "One in a Million" is a killer song, and "Used to Love Her" is hilarious. Don't really care for "Patience" (I can take it or leave it) but it's a popular song, and a part of their canon.
Picked my favorite songs off of the "Illusion" albums, and used the different versions of "Don't Cry" to open and close that section.
Stuck "Since I Don't Have You" on at the end as kind of a "bonus" track. "Spaghetti" is a compilation of covers, and I don't really count it as a "real" GNR album as such. That's the one most people have heard, so it goes there.

I had practically all my GNR stuff on tape back in the 80's (some of which consisted of recordable tapes made off of friends bought tapes - who says piracy didn't exist in the 80's??).
A few years ago, I replaced these ancient relics with CDs (I'm staring at my Use Your Illusion I cd beside me as we speak). Their live stuff is pretty great also. So, who ran for their GNR after the VMAs the other night? Yeah, so they say his voice was rough, it wasn't the same band. Blah blah blah. I know there were plenty more like me that were just completely psyched to see Axl back up on stage. Hearing the first few strains of "Welcome To The Jungle" sent me right back to my jr. high days.
GNR fans might also want to check out the "Interview w/a Vampire" soundtrack. They cover "Sympathy for the Devil" and although some might disagree, this is definitely one of the best Stones covers that *I* know of.
