Iron Maiden: Rock In Rio ROCKS!!!!
Oh. My. God.
This thing rocks so hard. It's got an insane DTS surround track that blows away any other disk I've ever heard - music or movie. Seriously! It really feels like you're right in the middle of the music with all the instruments surrounding you and rocking your very soul. It's got perfect separation of each instrument track and everything's leveled to perfection - I really can't say enough good things about the sound on this disc. The performance is really good too - it was recorded last year in Rio in front of 300,000 people, specifically for this dvd release - so they knew exactly what they wanted and they sure go it.
Only two negatives:
1. Too many cuts/edits. There is no shot that lasts for longer than two seconds. It's like they wanted to make sure you knew that they had over 50 cameras recording the show as they just randomly cycle through every one of them with no rhyme or reason. You cant get a good look of any single band member because the camera never stays on any of them long enough to get a sense of what they're doing.
- And
2. Not enough classic songs. Only half the set of 20 songs is from their first 7 (great) albums - the other half is from their last 4 (not so great) albums - most of those are from their newest album (which is actually pretty good, but it's no Piece of Mind), so it's pretty lop-sided. But the great performance and the insane sound quality pretty much negate the two above issues (it was also only $14, which is less than any Maiden cd).
There is also a bonus disc of interviews and behind the scenes stuff that I haven't looked at yet.
But the quality of the performance and the audio track alone are worth this great set.

Hmmm, I've been harshly debating whether to pick this up or not. I just might now, sounds like I'll get my money's worth regardless of the over-abundance of newer songs.

I had the vhs version of Live After Death when it first came out around 15 years ago.
I'm waiting for a good remastered dvd version of that to come out here in the States, as I understand that the Brazil version doesn't sound or look too good - and it may also be a bootleg.

. . . just wanted to touch for a moment on the editing of "Rock In Rio". I see alot of posts (not only in this forum), where people complain about the quick cutting and sweeping angles. It's funny how many of these same folks hail "Live After Death" as one of the greatest concert films ever made then bash "RIR".
I just finished watching "LAD" and I have to say that if I didn't know better I'd swear the same director was responsible for them both. "LAD" has the same types of angles and the same quick cuts. Most cuts lasting only a second or two.
I know there are some people out there who haven't seen "RIR" but have been on the fence about buying it. Probably because of some of what they've read about it. -- Go watch "LAD" and then imagine a shaper image, DTS sound, older guys and shorter hair and you pretty much have "RIR". Both are great shows and are definately worthy.
. . . as for the flimsy packaging -- I'm sorry but that's true.
~Cheers~

Just a word of warning:
If you have a subwoofer - before putting in the second disc, turn it WAY down, becuse the menus on the 2nd disc will blow it out.

Does anyone have the "Live After Death" DVD? I've seen this one sold on Ebay...............mainly from Brazil.
How is the video and audio quality? Does it play on U.S. DVD players?
Like one poster already said, "Rock in Rio" is a great DVD, but it lacks many songs from the first six Maiden CDs. Also, "Live......"
is my all-time favorite Maiden album.
Thanks for any help.

Check out this closed thread for a variety of viewpoints: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=226463
In the final post I put across my personal view.
For information, Sanctuary never got back to me. I checked up on the Maiden forums but even there the info concerning the DVD's legitimacy was ambiguous I thought.
For info on other Regions, and compatability, check out this thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=167378

Oh,and I also had a chance to watch my RIR DVD
I thought it was pretty good.
The audio mix was pretty good but there were times you couldn't hear some vocals.
The video was good,at some points it was a bit fuzzy because of the hand helds they used.
One thing that was a bit annoying was the fact that they did let you know they filmed it with 5,000,000,000 cameras!
But to me,it was really about HEARing the music and not so much watch the show.I enjoy concerts as a visual, but its not the first thing I go for.I like the LIVE sound.
I gave the audio a 4 out of 5
I gave the video a 3 out of 5
Overall I give it a 3 1/2
