please help me with my Tori Amos playlist
Hi!
I'm making a CD of my favorite Tori songs from her studio albums. I have 80 minutes to play with an it was terribly hard picking the 18 songs, but I have. I am just going nuts trying to put them in perfect order. Suggestions of the "perfect" playlist from other Tori fans or ideas of how I should change mine would be much appreciated. I'm sure that numbers 1 and 2 won't change but, after that, it's totally wide open. I kind of want a pace of a concert if anyone knows what I mean. Songs that just seem to go well one after the other. Usually I have no problem but I can't seem to be happy no matter how I change things around. Please help me out and tell me what you think I should change.
Current playlist:
Caught a lite sneeze
A Sorta Fairytale
Hey Jupiter
Silent all these years
Pretty Good Year
Raspberry Swirl
Taxi Ride
Black Dove (January)
Crucify
God
Strange Little Girl
Amber Waves
Talula
Tear in your hand
Spark
Cornflake Girl
Bliss
Precious Things
Thanks.

Hmmm.... lemme think about that for a while.
There are so many songs that could fill an 80 minute cd.
Are you limiting it to just songs off released cd, or would you include cover songs and b sides that were on singles?
If so, you should include Sugar, just to name one song.

I would throw Winter and Me & a Gun. Me & a Gun gives me shivers every time I listen to it. Jackie's Strength would sandwich well between Silent All These Years and Pretty Good Year, in my opinion.

Songs like Sugar, Sweet Dreams. Flying Dutchman and Upside Down are not from her studio albums and I want this one to be just from her released albums. Adding singles would just knock out too many of the 18 songs I chose. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, but I was looking more for help in the order of the songs that I did choose.
Thanks.

I don;t have a few of the songs you listed, but when I get home from work, I'll rip an mp3 of each that I do have and see if I can find a flowing order for them.

Well, I haven't heard any of the Scarlet's Walk songs yet, I'm waiting until the CD comes out so that I can enjoy it as a whole.
That, and maybe I'm just Tori'd out right now. She's my favorite artist, but I'm still kinda coming down from the peak of my obsession back around 1997 or so. I just got so tired of the "I'm a bigger fan than you'll ever be" scene and realized that my obsession was bordering on unhealthy. I can wait for the new CD, though I will buy it the day it comes available.
The main problem I see with your playlist is that it's got a lot of ups and downs. Raspberry Swirl is preceeded and followed by songs that aren't nearly as frantic, and songs that could have followed, like Strange Little Girl, Bliss or Spark are spread throughout. Try to keep your tempo changes down to maybe three or four throughout the entire CD, and don't go from a very fast song to a very slow one. Try to build up or down, and you'll find your CD flows better.
My top 18 songs|songlist -- full length CDs only
-- would be:
Rattlesnakes
Real Men
Bliss
Raspberry Swirl
Caught a Lite Sneeze
Silent All These Years
Black Dove (January)
Putting the Damage On (my Tori site was named after this -- still think it's her best work)
Doughnut Song
Hey Jupiter
Mother
Winter
Jackie's Strength
Playboy Mommy
Cooling (it's on Venus and Back)
--encore--
Flying Dutchman (cheating because I love it so)
Upside down (cheating again)
1000 Oceans
The only thing not on that list that I'd really want is Tear in Your Hand, not because it's really one of my favorites, but it is one that Tori played for specifically for me and my ex-girlfriend -- there is no song that carries more weight for me.
How do I know it was played for us? Eight people, including me, got to make requests, I saw the list written on her arm, and I heard every request made. She told me she couldn't play it because the venue wasn't really suitable and then asked if we were attending the Dallas or Houston shows. We weren't, so she played it anyway. Very cool moment.

PS-Remember the first 2 songs are not going to change, so I need help with the order of 3-18 only.

Tori does change the tempo, but you'll find that the tempo doesn't typically change constantly throughout the show.
I don't know the new songs, so you'll have to figure out where to fit them (if you can tell me what songs they are similar to in tempo, I can tell you where to put them). I would do those songs like this:
Caught a lite sneeze
A Sorta Fairytale
Spark
Talula
Bliss
Raspberry Swirl
Strange Little Girl
Taxi Ride (?)
Amber Waves (?)
Silent all these years
Pretty Good Year
Hey Jupiter
Black Dove (January)
Crucify
God
Cornflake Girl
Precious Things
Tear in your hand
I put Taxi Ride and Amber Waves where I did because I don't really have anything to break in between SLG and SATY. Something irreverant like Mr. Zebra would work well there, or something neither fast nor slow. Basically, the listing starts with a moderate tempo, and builds to Raspberry Swirl. Then it slows back down into some of the slow, melancholy stuff, proceeding to second, more gentle climax, and finishing off with a gentle letdown.
