Listening to Solomon Burke's new album 'Don't Give Up on Me'

Due out on July 23rd, Solomon Burke's new album has been very highly praise by critics. It's being compared to Johnny Cash's comeback album American Recordings. His record label has the entire album up to listen to with RealPlayer on their site http://www.fatpossum.com/ or if this direct link works: http://content.epitaph.com/Anti/Solo...m/solomon.smil

The songs featured on the album are new songs written by Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello and more. Give this thing a listen. I know I'm sold.

The album is amazing. I've been digging on it for a while now. I guarantee that this record will sweep the Grammys next year.

I'm a big fan of Fat Possum's other CDs, R.L. Burnside and that sort of thing -- how is this one compared? More of the "juke joint blues" or is it a more polished production? (Me, I prefer the rawer stuff and less of the "Beer commercial" blues sound)

Well, Solomon Burke is a legendary soul singer, not a bluesman. Not at all like RL Burnside, pretty polished. But his voice is just stunning and the songwriting is stellar. I typically like the grittier sound more (favorite soul singers: James Brown, Otis Redding, Arthur Alexander, William Bell), but this is just too good to pass up.
