can i share my music if i want to?

I know that the big uproar over music sharing sites is still going on, but can a single person legally share their music if they want to with people they meet on the internet?

For example, if someone here at dvdtalk wanted a Tori Amos song that I had, could I contact that person and let them have the song from my files? Or is even small, personal trading like that considered to be just as bad as entire sites dedicated to millions of people sharing music with strangers?

Also, when I copied most of my own music into my Windows Media Player the files say wma and not mp3. Is there a big difference or if I sent someone an wma file would they still be able to play it or easily convert it into mp3?

thanks

It is illegal to share no matter how small.

Personally I don't like wma...I don't like the compression...it's basically low quality vbr in disguise.

Have the court decisions from the 80's been overturned?

Do I have a choice? When I put the CDs in to copy them that's (the wma) what it converts it to.

Can I convert it all into mp3 somehow with the windows media player?

It's illegal as far as I know. You are distributing copyrighted material.

What are these court decisions you speak of?

Essentially, that it's legal to give copies of tapes to your friends. The question was a serious one, I don't recall how general those laws are or if they've been deemed unapplicable to mp3's.

Are you referring to the Home Recording Act possibly? It is lawful to make copies for yourself but not to distribute. I could be totally off base though.

I beleive that also had something to do with you profiting from it,but I'm not 100% sure

Probably not. I'd guess that, being made by Microsoft, Windows Media Player will only convert thinks to their own format. I'd go look around for one of the many CD>MP3 apps and use that instead of Windows Media Player.

Unless they have it and you are providing a back up version for them and they have the same music, it is still illegal.
