Well, I finally picked up a gamecube today. Erternal Darkness just looked way to cool to pass on. I'm a big RPG fan, are there any good ones on the cube, or am I going to have wait a year or two for Nintendo to catch up?

Nintendo won't catch up. There were hardly any RPGs on the N64 and the GCN looks to be in the same boat.
However, the recently released Lost Kingdoms has gotten pretty decent reviews. It's a card based RPG. Think Magic The Gathering, but supposedly much more exciting (so the reviews say).
EGM gave it a 8.5, 8.5, 7.5 (which is a Silver Award) so they obviously liked it.
On the bright side you should love Eternal Darkenss. It's simply phenomenal.

Was Quest64 and Aladyn he only rpg on n64? It is nice that for GC, nintendo is not going full force with "cute" character games and racing games, but in actualiy, I dont even think there is any RPG on x-box either?Am i wrong?

I was just checking out PlanetGameCube's release list and it looks like there aren't many RPGs planned at all.
They listed:
Evolution worlds (which will probably suck, since the DC version did)
Gothic (which may be a port of a PC RPG of the same name)
Skies of Arcadia (if you haven't played this on your DC, then this is the one to get. Some claim it's better then Final Fantasy).
Virtual Fighter Quest (no clue about this one)
Phantasy Star Online 1 and 2
A GC version of Golden Sun isn't on that list, but I've heard it's in development. It seems to me there were more in the pipelines, but I'll be darned if I can remember them.
Oh yeah, rumors fly about some kind of Square RPG showing up that connects to the GBA, but I don't think that has been substantiated yet.

That's why I opted to get a PSone instead of any of the newer systems (not concerned about Final Fantasy X, so I skipped the PS2).

Isn't Retro, the makers of Metroid Prime, working on an RPG. I'm pretty tired right now so excuse me if I'm way off base.
Anyways there's only 1 or 2 decent RPGs on the market right now so it's not like GC owners are missing much.

Adventure games are more or less RPGs, I think. The N64 Zelda games have all the same elements, you just don't have turn-based or strategic battles. Mario Adventure had turn-based battles, and therefore fits my definition of RPG...

Lost Kingdoms is an okay game. I tried it out, but the card battling really didn't interest me. Other than that game there isn't a lot of options for Gamecube RPGs in the near future.
To be honest the absolute best platform to get for RPGs is probably the Game Boy Advance. Tactics Orge, Breath of Fire I and II, Dragon Warrior I, II, and III, Lufia the Legend Returns, Golden Sun. All great RPGs that will work on the GBA. Golden Sun II and Square RPGs are suppose to be on the way for it as well. It doesn't have the graphics of a console, but with RPGs the graphics are not that important.

Fair enough. I forgot about Paper Mario (which I just played not a month ago) which is a true RPG. Zelda is a tough one, but it could count as an action RPG. For some reason I was thinking of Mario 64 and not Paper Mario when you mentioned Mario. Or not thinking as the case may be.

The PS2 is probably the best system for RPG's, but then again the PSX also was the best system last year for RPG's. I rented Lost Kingdoms awhile back, its not that bad as a game but its semi above average. The think that rocks about it is the combat system! It's fun but takes awhile to figure out. The only thing I didn't like about it was the music which wasn't that great but other than that its pretty good.
In the future I hope there will be a Mario RPG or Paper Mario sequel, both great games! Skies of Arcadia is definitely a good one that is coming soon, I own the DC version and love it. I think Namco is developing a Tales of Phantasia game and then Square's got some mystery GC RPG coming out too that'll make use of the GBA link. But I don't think the GC will be the main platform for RPG's, there are still lots of other great games on it!
