Treasure's Ikaruga Comes to Dreamcast
One last treasure for a system full of classics.
June 27, 2002 - Forget what you've been seeing on the front page of IGNDC for the past few months, NHL2K2 is not the last Dreamcast game. Well, perhaps in America it is, but as was revealed in this week's round of Japanese magazines, DC owners in Japan are in for one more big surprise as Treasure's uniquew arcade shooter Ikaruga at long last makes its way home. Not in the least bit excited? Then you're probably a communist.
The home status of the overhead shooter, which saw Japanese arcade release on Sega's Naomi arcade board late last year, had been in question due to reports of Treasure's reluctance on the matter. The prospect of a home conversion has been of tremendous concern for gamers owing to rave reviews of the arcade version, and simply Treasure's legacy of fantastic software. Previous games from the developer include Gunstar Heroes (Genesis), Guardian Heroes (Saturn), Sin & Punishment (N64) and, of course, Radiant Silvergun (Saturn), the latter title serving as somewhat of a prequel to Ikaruga.
All speculation can be tossed out the window now as a Dreamcast conversion will arrive to Japan on 9/5/2002 for the price of 6800 yen. The home version is currently 99% complete, and the tiny screenshots we've seen suggest a game that's identical to its arcade counterpart (as well it should owing to the simple nature of the Naomi to Dreamcast conversion process).
