I haven't played nearly enough to give more than initial thoughts, but so far it strikes me as a combination of Baulder's Gate 1/2 and Dungeon Siege. It's not nearly as daunting as Morrowind so far. There is alot to see/do/read but it has much more direction to it. Beautiful engine and interface. It looks extremely promising so far.

Did it come out? The Best Buy by me didn't have it at all. And they took down the pre-order boxes.

I had mine pre-ordered 2 weeks ago.

Yeah, it came out Tuesday in some stores and Wednesday in most others (well, specialty stores like EB and Babbages). Best Buy and Wal-Mart and such are always slower to get new games in.

That sucks.. I've been looking forward to this game for a long time.

The pre-order box said it would be out Thursday 6/20.

No mention of final price.

How much is it other places?

There is a good chance they will have it today I would say. It's $59 everywhere I have seen. It has really only be out since yesterday - I was lucky and the store near me did a same day shipment for it, so it came out real fast. But not very many stores did that, it depends on where in the country people are located etc.

Now if only I could find time to play more....

I got mine for $54.99 from ebgames.com with free overnight shipping.

I haven't played the actual single player that much because I'm having a blast creating my own modules. The toolset is pretty ease to use and scripting is a snap. The best part is I can program to my hearts content at my job because my boss thinks I'm doing work when I'm really scripting my game!

Some initial impressions - those people who say that it is like a cross of BG and Diablo are spot on. The graphics remind me alot of Darkstone.

I was able to get my Bard Mercurio up to level 2. I think the most interesting thing to me was how combat was implemented - and how the "dice rolls" were shown on screen. The camera is taking some time to get used to but I think given some time with the game I'll get the hang of it.

And this is only one facet of NN - have yet to test multiplayer and DM capabilities, but from what I've seen so far it looks and plays well.

I finally sat down and played a long 2 player session last night.

My initial impressions are that this game is a lot of fun, and they did a lot fo things right.

The camera does take some getting used to, but I didn't find myself fighting with it like I did in Dungeon Siege.

There is plenty of stuff going on in the city areas, a ton of little side quests to do, lots of things to interact with. We played with the DM client brieifly and it seems pretty powerful, but didn't spend that much time with it.

My only big complaint is the inventory system. It's still pretty usable, but moving things from one "page" of your inventory to another is a little more difficult than it needs to be.

I like the fact that "lost" plot items can be retrieved in the Temple of Tyr. My machine locked up and I was holding one of the notes needed for a quest. Went to the divining pool and coughed up a little gold, and there it was. A nice fictional way to take care of an unaviodable problem.

So far I would have to recommend NWN to anyone that wants a good RPG.

Has anyone tried the editing part of the game yet? This is probably the big selling point for me.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread...

Playing NWN off and on for three weeks now. My main character is a Rogue 3/Sorceror 13 who kicketh much ass. I'm also playing around with a Ranger/Fighter combo, trying a Legolas type character(fire as many arrows as fast as possible) I haven't tried the toolset yet, as I'm having a lot of fun with the single player game.

How is everyone's NWN experience?

It's very buggy. Anyone wanting to buy the game should browse the tech support forum first and see if there are any issues that might affect them. There have already been 3 patches, the latest of which has stopped the game working for a lot of people (I haven't been game to use the latest patch myself).

The actual 1 player game is quite weak. More like a D&D version of Diablo than the Baldurs Gate games, partly due to not having a party to control but also because there's a lot more killing. Basically if you're expecting anything like either Baldurs Gate 2 or PS:Torment you'll be hugely disappointed. Multiplayer is where it's at obviously although the 1 player module that comes with the game isn't really balanced for more than about 2 players (way too easy). As you'd expect there aren't really any good custom mods out yet.

Most issues have been narrowed down to mainly ATI drivers. I know, I was one of the people. Since finding the right driver, I have had ZERO problems.

Campign is fun, very fun. Did I play BG and Torment? Yes. Did I love them? Very much so. But, NWN is still good and has an excellent RPG feel to it. Its more than story... its exploring, combat and building a character. Lots to do and plenty of fun. More Icwind Daleish, without the party.

Toolset is awesome, limited in content currently, but VERY powerful. Once you learn, you can do great things.

Multiplayer is also great. If you look around, you will find some excellent communities starting up where playing on the server is just like a MMORPG, where it constantly expands and changes.

There are good modules out, you just need to find them.

Which brings me to... we DVDTalkers should trade modules as we make them, or run DMed games with them for other DVDTalkers. I have three in the works and would love to share when done.

And their review once read reveals it is unrealistic.

and which driver would that be?
The driver seems to vary, but the popular one to have is the 6071 driver. It was recommended by Bioware and seemed to fix most people's troubles.

The problem can usually be identified right away, as the game would either crash immediately, or crash upon saving and/or loading. So, if that does not fix it, the tech forums are a great help.

So outer-edge, what types of characters are you playing?

Also, anyone who hasn't yet should download the Henchman Battle and Inventory Control mods at http://snow.prohosting.com/wperpo/ There's an extensive thread regarding these mods at the official forum http://forums.bioware.com Check it out!

This is worst review of a game ever!

From the Review:

"It’s no secret that, unlike Diablo II, the main focus of Neverwinter Nights is the single player. But still, as an afterthought, Atari included a multiplayer mode."

"It’s too bad the concept of modding a game is restricted to the FPS genre, as Neverwinter Nights is sorely in need of something like this. Patches and expansion packs will probably ensue, but nothing can make up for this shortsightedness on Atari’s part, and quite frankly, I'm not interested in paying EXTRA money for a product or service I was originally promised in the first place!"

More from the review:

"The Cons: Not much to do after single player is completed. Shallow multiplayer and boring graphics. Many races and characters are not consistent with the "Dungeons and Dragons Universe," as seen in such games as Rifts, Jorune, and the movie "Dungeons and Dragons. "

It's true that multiplayer is pretty weak on the existing 1 player mod. It's also true that there aren't any new mods that are worth playing (that aren't really just hack and slash fests). So basically if you want to play a top notch mod right now which involves lots of role playing then you have to make it yourself.

Also true that the tilesets do get old fast (caves, caves and more caves!! and since when do nymphs live in the same types of mansions as high level wizards?!). However the same problem exists in a number of other rpgs so I wouldn't pick at it too much for that.

A bit harsh maybe, but true.

Can you make your own characters with your portraits and/or models? In Baldur's Gate and Icewind, for example, I can put in my own portraits and other such fun...Is this possible with NWN?

Hari,

My single player character is a straight-shooting Halfling Druid. I was at first mad at the lack of wild shapes, animal companions and Magic Fang spells, but have had a enormous amount of fun with the character. Once I got to it, I found more diversity and found ways to pump up myself and my creatures. At level 10, little can take down a summoned Dire Tiger with Empowered Bull's Strength and Stoneskin. Also, those empowered Call Lightnings rip through almost anything as well.

Online, I have tried almost every class and liked most of what I have seen. My fav. so far is on a Persitant server, a Dwarven Ranger 6 / Rogue 3. This character makes excellent use of dual-wield, fav. enemies, animal companions, hide/move silently, sneak attacks and setting traps. It has been great fun with this combo. I will strive for Ranger 15 / Rogue 5.

So far, I have to say the classes are well balanced. Although some classes are hard to do without a party, they can become very powerful and each one has its own unique fun.

aeron,

You can do portraits, but it is not streamlined yet. However, Bioware is working on making it easier to import custom content. Once they release some good tools, people already have tons of models and tilesets created and ready to go. You can use tilesets now however, and some are well done. There are also people doing custom music and similar things.

For those complaining about lack of good modules, perhaps we can share ones we make and others we find that are good? I am working on one single-player module that should be good fun, especially to those who are fans of The 13th Warrior. I am also working on a higher level multiplayer mod, which will have a lot of hack-n-slash, but with very customized enemies. My third (I know, I should finish one first), whould be a fun multiplayer module with good story and exploration, as well as memorable events.

Oh yeah, and for those that do enjoy Hack-n-Slash and have a good connection, I suggest finding a full Contest of Champions server (Bioware's module). It is very fun with full teams and nice hectic battling and teamwork.
