New console owners' thoughts?

Just wondering what people who recently bought a second or third console think of their new purchase.

I've had my Xbox for about a week now, and I've only played 3 games (I bought Amped at lunch today, so soon to be 4), so this is hardly a comprehensive review...

So far I think the best thing about the Xbox is it's potential. There should be some great titles coming out over the next 6 months or so.

Obviously the hardware is impressive. Dolby Digital 5.1 sound adds a lot to a game. Of the 3 titles I've played (see below), Halo seems to take advantage of DD the best.

Halo is in a class by itself. Nothing I've played on the PS2 comes close, but I've never really given FPS games on a console a chance. Maybe I should go back and try some other console FPS games. I wouldn't call someone crazy if they said that Halo is worth $250 alone. Right now, for me Halo plus the Xbox's potential is worth $250.

Project Gotham Racing is pretty good, but I hit a wall in terms of it's difficulty in under an hour of playing time. The Kudos system is unique, but overall, the game makes me want to play Gran Turismo 3. I think GT3 is a better overall game, but PGR is more of an arcade racer game where GT3 is more of a driving sim (or at least trying to be).

Dead or Alive 3 is drop dead gorgeous. The gameplay is too simple though. I beat it in 20 minutes the first time I played it, and I had no idea what I was doing. I did use a few continues, but I beat Omega on the first try my second time through. I don't think this is really meant to be a single player game. There's just not much to it. I REALLY appreciate Virtua Fighter 4 and it's Kumite mode now. This one would be much more fun with 2-4 people.

I guess my overall feeling is that if you have a PS2 and can't afford to get an Xbox, don't sweat it too much. Granted, I've only played 3 games, but I don't think I'll be putting my PS2 away any time soon. Having the option to play games for either system is pretty sweet, so the easiest approach is to just buy 2 or 3 consoles and enjoy what each has to offer.

I finally broke down last weekend and bought an Xbox to go along with my PS2. I'm very happy with my purchase so far.

I picked up Morrowind (for me) and Oddworld (for my wife) and we're both enjoying the games.

I'm getting a new receiver (Onkyo TX-SR600) in next week and can't wait to have both systems hooked up for 5.1 sound.

I also like the fact that now I have 2 systems to choose games from. I am worried that when Zelda and Super Mario come out that I may have to complete the system trifecta though.

Go for the trifecta! If there are any system exclusive games that come out that you want to play you can just go out and buy it. That's what I do. I feel sad for my wallet though.

I got a PS2 to go along with my Gamecube right after the price drop and I'm very pleased with it. I've mainly been playing Final Fantasy X (great game) with a little Maximo and Gran Turismo 3 on the side. I'm looking forward to Metal Gear Solid Substance, Tekken 4 and maybe Rygar and Shinobi, not to mention the back log of games like GTA3 and Devil May Cry that I'll pick up eventually.

I don't play games enough, or have the finances, to justify owning all three systems, and the PS2, GCN (along with the GBA on the portable side) is the best choice for me. I get to play nearly every game that interests me that way. All I'm missing on the X-box that interests me is Halo (which isn't a biggie for me since I'm only a casual FPS fan) and World Series Baseball (and the mixed reviews of that one make me unsure of whether I'd like it).

So far, Amped is VERY frustrating. I'm hoping to stick with it and at least get my $20 worth out of it. Any tips? Landings are hard to nail.

The graphics in the game are great, but the on screen display menus have so many jaggies that it's driving me nuts. Looks like a PS1 game when you're in the menus.

Just keep going in Amped until you get a few points to put into attributes. Having more in spin and balance will help you land. I had Amped, but sold it after I got to about 70th world rank... it just got too tough for me (well, maybe not tough, but definately too frustrating) But for $20, it is worth it, imho. Also, I had DOA3 but just traded it in, because I played if for like the first 2 days I had it (back in December), and hadn't touched it since. I'm thinking about checking out Morrorwind next.

Agree with the menus of Amped being bad.. With the in-game graphics being so good, I cant believe the menus looking like Sega Saturn graphics.

The game I love though, was hesitant when I picked it up for $20 at Compusa, but it has garnered the most hours of any other game I hae in my short Xbox lifespan except HALO.

As for the topic of the original thread, I love my Xbox, and dont have any other systems.

I recently purchased a PS2 about 3 weeks ago. So far I've only played Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty, Batman Vengance, Knockout Kings 2002, Zone Of The Enders, Headhunter, State of Emergency and NHL 2002. So far I'm quite happy with it. I haven't had the chance to play GTA 3.
Most of the games at the video store I go to have been getting stolen so I may have to buy GTA 3 outright.

The main reason I got the PS2 was for Metal Gear.

Gromit - PGR is one of those games that you'll end up going back to at some point and you'll break through that wall and realize just how awesome the game is. This seems to be how most people approach the game. I was the same way - I hit a wall after an hour or so and put it away to play other games. Then I ran out of games to play one day so I popped PGR back in and got used to the controlls and how the cars physics work and I've found it to be quite an enjoyable game. If you like Gran Tourismo, you'll like Sega GT for Xbox.

I picked up a Gamecube to sit beside my PS2. I have wanted to play Rouge Leader so bad, so I couldn't resist after the price drop. I also bought Super Monkey Ball. Both games are great and I love the Cube. No regrets what-so-ever. If you have a PS2 and are thinking about getting the GC, I whole-heartedly recommend it. With the PS2, GC, and a good PC, I believe all of my gaming needs are covered for a few years.

I got xbox some weeks back to go with my PS2. I've got 3 games, spiderman, nba inside 2002, and Halo. And I truly am impressed with Halo and the possibilities. I fully agree also that Halo is such a great game! I am not a big time fan of FPS, but Halo is truly amazing! I don't even have hookups for my 5.1 yet, and already I'm impressed. I also use the default connectors, so I can just imagine how much better it would be if I finally cough up on the monster cables! The 3 games I have for xbox I really enjoy a lot, so I am a happy camper at this point. In fact, I now check if games are coming out for both PS2 and Xbox, cause if it does, I'll surely grab the xbox copy instead. PS2 so far has the best game library, I agree, but all things equal, give a developer access to both systems and surely xbox version will be so much better. Of course, I still like my PS2s. Will not be grabbing gamecube, though. I think two is enough for now.

Well, just like almost everyone here, I bought an xbox after the drop, and got tons of games for it, but the ones that get tons of play time is HALO (can you say addicted?) MotoGP (Sweeet), and Spiderman(it just looks better on the xbox).

Love the controllers, at first I tought it was too big, but it's intuitive for Halo, Love the hard drive, and 5.1 ingame just straight up rocks.

BEST XBOX MOMENT: Listening to NAS' Life's a B#$*% while peeling out @ MotoGP and finally crashing and hitting a wall.

I picked up the PS2, however it hasn't arrived yet, eventhough all of my games have!

When it does eventually show up from EBGames.com, I gots GTA3, Silent Hill 2, MGS2, and Devil May Cry to keep me company for a good long time. However, after these I don't really know what else the system has to offer

I have a PS2 and got an X-Box the day it came out, since then the PS2 has collected dust when I got PS2 I was hyped about all the big games coming to the system until those games came out and I played them, only to find out they were not as good as what I thought they would be. Metal gear solid 2 had good gameplay but the lame story kept draging me out of the game and raiden the ***** boy didn't help much. GT3 was no where near as good as GT2 it had less cars, no racing details for your cars, and slow control when steering GT2 cars turned a hell of alot better. My list goes on but I will stop here so that I don't get flamed to badly, but I wish I would have never bought the PS2 I dont like to many of the games that are out and I only see a handfull of games coming out that I might like. X-BOX has me hooked there is enough good games out right now to keep me happy, but the future is where the pot of gold is, there is so many great looking games coming to the BOX I can't wait! As for GAMECUBE I can't really say I played my friends He bought one and sold it 5 days later He was not happy with it at all. So I only had the chance to play it a few times to me it was nothing great rouge leader was cool but to short, resident evil is sweet but I can't justify spending 150 bones for one cool game. There is almost no upcoming games for the cube that interest me I'm not into platformer games like mario or cartoon zelda. So my final verdict is X-BOX now and for the future, PS2 for some cool upcoming games
