What / Who determines what songs play on the radio from cd?

I have always wondered who or what determines what tracks from a cd make it to a radio? I know (I'm sure you guys do too) a lot of songs from cds that I think should of been played on the radio, but never made it. On some cds, songs I would of picked further down the list made it before others.

"Business" and "Hallie's song" are said to be Eminems next two singles out from his cd. How was this determined?

...and I did have a feeling that "Business" would get on to the radio. Just has that beat / flow >> everything clicks!

So, how?

Read here why modern radio is an unredeemable wasteland of crap.

It's worse now than when DJs were taking direct payola in the 50s and 60s.

usually the studio does with some feedback from the artist. Once you see a video for the song, or see it listed by Billboard, then you know for sure it's "a single"

Little toads with dollar signs for eyes and pointy tails.

It's usually A&R men and the head honchos at the radio conglomerates. That link Jepthah posted spells out much of the ugliness. It's pretty ugly stuff.

Occasionally, college radio is able to break through some of the muckity-muck and push a good song.

When I was co-djing with a friend of mine a couple of summer ago's over at UMBC we were playing a boatload of new (unsigned in the US) UK bands, it was a lot of fun.
