Le Samourai

http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASI...926173-3952231

Before I purchase this item from Amazon France, I wanted to make sure this is Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai (1967).

I tried doing the Alta Vista translation but there's really not enough info to go on. Also, if I got it, there would have to be English subs... does anyone know much about this release?

...yup... I'm 99.9999% sure it is the movie starring Alain Delon...

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=5444

...of course, since this movie is 35 years old today, before ordering the disc it wouldn't hurt you to wait just a few weeks more until you can make absolutely 100% sure that it's the one you want (pre-ordering DVDs in France doesn't give you any advantages such as an extra discount ... afaik...)

I got this disc from Luminous Film and Video and it's anamorphic with English Subs. Great disc.

Off-topic?

Watch this and then watch The Driver with Ryan O'Neal and ponder, as I did, the character of the anti-hero and the relationship/interrraction with his nemesis in each case ....

Thanks to all of you for your input. I ordered the disc from cinestore, yesterday. I have ordered from there before. I got a dvd of Satyajit Ray's The Music Room from them. It's an R0 NTSC, but it's from France.

I'm very excited about this disc of Le Samourai, it's one of my very favorite films ever.

Stuart Livesly,

From your signature, I assume you are looking for a dvd of Jean Renoir's "Rules of the Game"(La règle du jeu).

Here is a PAL Region 2 release with English, German, and Spanish subtitles:

http://www.cinestore.com/html/fiche_...&page=1&id=240

Regards,

JohnN

I got my copy of La règle du jeu in the middle of last year some time. I also have a copy of Le Samouraï already - this May 15th date seems to be a rerelease. Both nice disks and very good films.

im still quite confused cuz it sez on Amazon.fr :
Le samouraï will be available only/released on 15May.
~I believe some of u guys already have it! Is this re-release any different?

La règle du jeu Not Available on Amazon.fr

Cinéstore sez: Under Expédition, "Prevue dans 1 à 2 semaine(s)"

So can i go rite ahead and purchase both at Cinéstore tonite?

"...So can i go rite ahead and purchase both at Cinéstore tonite?"

...Oh my! You must be one of the "I want it NOW!" generation!...

Yes, you can, of course you can! However, it won't change the fact that Le Samouraï will only be (re-)released on May 15, 2002, and nor will it change the fact that La Règle du jeu will not be available (from cinéstore) before 1 or 2 weeks from now, as they clearly state...

...again, since the former movie is 35 years old, while the latter is some 63 years old, I don't see why you couldn't just wait a few weeks, then return to the cinéstore site, check if those two titles have become 'disponible' in the meantime and, if yes, go ahead and order them then...

...y'know... there are a surprising number of excellent French DVDs featuring excellent transfers (anamorphic[of course!] where applicable, i.e. movies with AR 1.66:1 and wider) of excellent copies of other, also excellent, French movies(*), with optional English subtitles, that are available NOW and that would tide you over very nicely until THEN...

(*) ... for instance...

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=110

...sigh...

heh

Maybe its becuz of the confusion stemming for information discrepancy between Amazon.fr and Cinéstore...

~Cinéstore sez to pop by 1 or 2 weeks later(re-stocking or releasing?)...
~Amazon.fr sez Le samouraï in 15mai and La règle du jeu, not available(not in production?)
=so there.

No harm waiting i guess since now that i know its re-stocking and a re-release.... No harm pre-ordering them too...

Hey... Marcel Carné Drôle de drame..... nice...

Hey Hendrik, know where i can find sum Policiers like those found here: http://www.pollanet.com/polizieschi/

Waiting is good. Especially since Cinestore have the bad habit of charging your credit card as soon as you order...

"Waiting is good."

Yup!

...I tend to order only DVDs that are labeled as disponible... since there are so many titles I want anyway, I can always find at least one or two that are available right away -> no frustration!...

"Hey Hendrik, know where i can find sum Policiers"

...well... there are a lot of those on French DVDs - BUT - mostly with French soundtrack ONLY - NO (English) subtitles...

...for instance, three of the Melville titles below would be what you (probably?) want:

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/search.php3...rre%20Melville

...as would several of these Verneuil titles:

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/search.php3...henri+verneuil

I agree Djangoman, I think Le Samourai has Criterion written all over it.

Unlikely that Criterion will do it. New Yorker has the rights.

We should be happy that a english subtitled version exists! The quality of the transfer is reportedly very good... Rene' Chateau video doesn't subtitle all their videos, so it was by pure chance (probably?) that Le Samourai was...

A few months ago, copies could be found on ebay. Now, it seems they've dried up...

IIRC, New Yorker actually no longer has the rights. They recently lost a lot of their video rights. Unfortunately, I don't know the details and I don't know who might have picked up the rights to LE SAMOURAI.
