Any reviews of Wet Hot American Summer yet?
Title speaks for itself. Looking so forward to finally seeing this movie...now if we could only get the State on DVD.

I saw the film in theaters...a bit convoluted at times with its humor (varies between gag bits and sarcastic, intentionally campy lines), but worth it. Garofalo and Pierce are great, and the scary OZ guy steals the show.

I haven't yet received my DVD yet from BN.com, but the film is absolutely hilarious. My favorite comedy in years. I HIGHLY recommended it for fans of bent humor (i.e., MTV's The State, Kids In The Hall, Strangers With Candy).
And with the extras (5+ hours) this is a no-brainer for me.

Just watched the DVD and saw the movie for the first time. My impressions...
The Movie: Hilarious. It's a bit strange because some of it plays like a long episode of the State and some plays like a dead-on parody of 80's summer camp movies. Still, I laughed harder than I have in quite a while. Janeane Garofalo is definitely the weakest cast member in the flick and seems to have some trouble keeping up with/adapting to the improvisational quick humor of it all. All of the members of the State are great in it and so are David Hyde Pearce ("This isn't the time nor the place to discuss it. Meet me at the picnic table in 10 seconds."), Paul Rudd and Christopher Meloni (as the crazed camp cook confronting his very interesting sexuality). It's a bit incoherent, but well worth it.
The Picture: Pretty good for such a low budget flick. It looked fine on my 32" WEGA anyway. Although, you can definitely tell it was filmed in a "Cold Pennsylvania Spring" and not during a Wet Hot American Summer. (Literally, there are indoor scenes where you can see rain falling outside on this supposedly beautiful summer day...which I found to be funny more than anything.)
The Sound: Leaves a bit to be desired. Disappointing that a new film doesn't have better than a below-standard 2.0 soundtrack. The dialogue is mostly clear, but I had some trouble making out a few of the lines (of course, this could also be due to the laughter of my friends).
The Extras: All I've watched are the deleted scenes. Some are funny. Most deserved to be cut. Others were just different versions of scenes from the movie (usually with some strange sexual stuff going on in the background. I plan on checking out the commentary and the "fart soundtrack" this weekend (hey, I've still gotta watch American Pie 2 Unrated and Tombstone Vista).
Overall, a very good purchase and a must-have for fans of the State.

Not to sound dumb but whats the "State"?
I thought this looked pretty good but saw where most critics thought all the jokes fell flat and it didn't get very good reviews.....
Any more of you see it and what did you think? I guess I'll rent it first, sounds iffy.....the cast sounds good though.

Thus far I've watched the film, extras, and interviews.
Well worth it. The crazed office rampage is easily my favorite scene....and, of course, the hour on the town.
This will be a cult video hit.

This film is VERY authentic looking in comparison to 80's camp films. Forget the Wedding Singer, etc., all of which are much too glossy and Hollywood. From the Dungeons and Dragons camper to David Hype Pierce's ultra-dorkiness, nearly all the characters seem plucked right out of the early 80's. So are the jokes. The rapid-fire humor sometimes fall flat and the dialogue can be ridiculous. However, it's one big inside joke. Much of the humor was intended to come off terribly. After all, this is a spoof of 80's camp films (right down to the classic cartoon film poster), not exactly Oscar-worthy material. And that's exactly what confused reviewers. Either you get it or you don't. If you were not a kid/teen/young adult that grew up on these films then you might not appreciate it. Be sure to check out the commentary, which points out all kinds of 80's references you're sure to miss even with repeat viewings (e.g., the Breakfast Club and Animal House references).
However, the film can be quite raunchy, biting, and bent. Once again, if you are a fan of left-field humor, you'll enjoy this picture. It's not a family film, however. There's drug use (hilariously overlayed by a Rick Springfield song), gay sex, numerous profanities, etc. Not quite John Waters, but more adult than spoofs as the Naked Guns.
The film was actually shot at a camp for a budget of less than $1 million. The cast includes Janeane Garofolo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Amy Poehler (now on SNL), and nearly the entire cast of The State (Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, etc.). Considering that they all probably received scale, there was obviously an extreme connection here.

I recommended this flick to one of my friends, who rented the only copy at Blockbuster.
She loved it and watched it twice. Since Blockbuster only has one copy, it is now being passed amongst her friends who are willing to absorb the late fees.

I had never heard of this film so I went and checked out some reviews. Most were very brutal and hung around the one star range. I may check it out anyway......

I saw this in the theater last fall and it was easily the best comedy I saw in 2001. I don't know why it took me so long to pick up the DVD, but I just got it last week, and it is so awesome. I love the way they produced the disk. It has the normal extras, but they are presented a little differently. For instance, the disc has production stills, and music highlights, and these GENIOUSES put them together! I loved it! I also loved the way they did the deleted scenes. Just one montage of all of them, each one short and sweet enough not to get boring. I still haven't watched with commentary yet or the extra fart track, but I can't wait for a couple days off work to spend with this disc.
I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I can see how some folks are gonna hate this movie but I thought it was hilarious. I'm not even sure who I'd recommend it to because some people are just not going to enjoy it. Definitely a matter of personal taste but I haven't laughed so hard in years...especially the trip to town and motorcycle chase scene.

Agreed. This was a bad, bad flick. I think this is the only DVD that I've ever owned where the time betwwen me receiving it, watching it, and placing it on Ebay was less than 24 hours....
I was a big fan of the 80's camp movies but this just failed in every possible way....

I thought it was a great movie and really funny. The humor becomes very random and weird at times. If its your type of humor then you will love it, but if its not then you'll hate it. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A, but Roger Ebert gave it an F. If I were you, I'd rent it first.
Don't forget to watch the deleted scenes. Some of them are funnier than the movie.

Get some friends together, preferably male, and put on the fart track. Hundreds of farts placed at perfect times throughout the movie. I'll bet Ebert hasn't watched it with the fart track yet.
