"The Grifters" has a beautiful widescreen transfer with no real extras other than actor bios. I'm not a big extras person, so I don't mind at all. It has a talking menu, which is kind of creepy in a way, because it'll pipe up when you least expect it to.
As far as the story is concerned, it's a great crime film with excellent performances from all three actors. There's also a million old school charcater actors in the film, like Henry Jones and Pat Hingle.

Thank you so much sir. This is one of my favorite Scorsese flicks but I was not sure about the quality of the disk itself(well....since it is from HBO).

Yep, he produced the movie. I consider it his work though....for some reason I could tell that he was involved.

...ahh... umm... personally (of course!) I think that Stephen Frears (My Beautiful Laundrette / Dangerous Liaisons / High Fidelity) is quite capable of standing on his own two legs, thank you... notwithstanding whoever produces one of his movies...

If anybody noticed, that's Scorcese doing the narrative voice-over at the beginning of the picture. Next time you watch the picture, check it out. It's very brief, but that's him talking.

Never paid any attention to Annette Bening until I saw The Grifters. Whew, I don't blame Beatty for settling down, the lucky (and probably tired) horndog.
Bening is a delight as the femme fatale, and seems to be channeling my film noir goddess Gloria Grahame - the physical resemblance is striking. One of the best neo-noirs, just jump in, watch the sparks fly and have a few oranges.

Personally, I think The Grifters is one of the best films of the '90s. It's a superb, yet unknown, film noir. The DVD has a decent non-anamorphic widescreen transfer and a good 5.1 soundtrack. It might be OOP, though.
