Sony again states that there will be no PS2 price cut this year.
from www.fgnonline.com:
Sony Stands Firm on PS2 Price
PlayStation 2: Sony has ramped up PlayStation 2 production but states that it still has no plans to cut the price of the console in the U.S.
Kazuo Hirai, president of SCEA, made the statement in an interview with Reuters Television. "We're very comfortable with the price point," he said, adding that the price would not be cut between now and the end of the year despite rival console launching this month.
Sony will increase its monthly PS2 production to two million units from the current 1.8 million units, Hirai added. This figure means that Sony will produce more PS2s in a month than Microsoft and Nintendo.

I have a DC a PS2 and will be picking up a GameCube and an XBox next week that being said I think it would be crazy for Sony to lower the price. They waited a long time on the first playstation if I remeber correctly and with people trying to buy X boxs and game cubes and them beind out of stock Sony should clean house this Christmas. Next Christmas should be a good battle.

I would have thought that at this point there was fairly little doubt that they weren't lowering the price. The conventional wisdom is that the best time to do it was about 3 or 4 weeks ago.
Anyway, here's a link to the original Reuters piece:

That's got to piss off a lot of GC fanboys. I love how the mainstream press always muffs the details. But, it also sort of highlights what kvrdave said. To a certain degree, consumers do form opinions about quality and market position based on price.

At $299, the PlayStation is matched evenly with the Xbox, which will also retail for $299. The GameCube has a retail price of $199, largely because it lacks high-end features like DVD playback or a built-in network adapter.

Agreed....why should Sony cut their price when they have released or are releasing some of the best games on the market for the 4th quarter???

Sony is performing strong enough even with advance orders for the upcoming Xbox and Gamecube systems.......
I myself ordered two PS2's for a couple of friends at the end of October. Their reasoning as was mine......they are converting from the PS1 with many PS1 games for their kids....why purchase one of the newer systems when the PS2 can not only play older PS1 games, dvds etc...but also has had an explosion of great titles in the 4th quarter to add to some already great games.
Sony is staying strong in the market which is good for all gamers when it comes to competition in the video game marketplace. Nintendo and Microsoft will strive to be on par with whom I would consider to be the best in the business for the time being.
I myself am looking forward to purchasing my Gamecube and Xbox in the near future.

IMO, there will be a price drop within six months. THe fact of the matter is that in the console games business, your installed base is everything, and with what look like 2 kick as$ systems coming out, sony will want to protect and increase their market share. The majority of purchasers aren't going to buy multiple systems, and they're also going to be won over by clever marketing. I just think that it's in sony's best interest to make a price drop, if even a small one.

isn't the price of the console as long as it's not ridiculous secondary to the price of the games and the quality of the games ?
Who cares if a console is $100 cheaper if games cost $10 more

Based on the original Playstation, expect a price decrease by about $50 after the first of the year, by late January, early February. It was at that point that Sony reduced the PS to $249.
