Ghost Recon demo

Has anybody downloaded this demo? It's really fun; I think the game is going to be great.

Does anyone know when the full version is going to be released?

I've played it - and it seems cool except that it seems a bit rough... The single player seems like it'll be great, but I question the multiplayer. I'm anxious for this to come out as well... I just hope they didn't go for realism too much and make the same mistake they made with Trespasser.

I noticed that the textures were really plain and there was alot of clipping. Also - some of the graphics in general were pretty rough. Hopefully they'll clean it up for when it goes gold. Oni was a great game, concept, and had sweet gameplay and graphics - but the levels were plain and boring.

I'm just excited for Duke Nukem Forever so much I can't really think about much else gamewise.

The sound effects are great! For some reason, the guns just sound very intimidating and "rough". More so than previous games in the series. It sounds like those over-the-top effects they use for Hollywood movies, actually. Try walking up to a wall and shooting it at close range with the M249 SAW. Awesome.

BTW, is there a command to make all three teams follow you? And is there a key to switch control between members of the same team? And how do you use the demolition charges? I know the command to place the charge down, but nothing happens afterwards.

On my Voodoo 3, all the menus and non-3D parts of the game are extremely blurred. And it appears the Voodoo3 is one of the few cards "not supported" by the game (the other is Voodoo5).

Oops... I was referring to Operation Flashpoint in my previous post.

I have played Ghost Recon (got them confused)... yes - it's an improvement in the series. However, the multiplayer is way too buggy for me to even get in a decent game. This is something that I'm sure they'll fix. Single player is nice. I like being able to get on the ground. You can do that in Operation Flashpoint too. The thing I don't like about these Rainbow 6 games is the setup time... plotting out all that stuff is really time consuming and usually I just want to go in and get to it. It's also nice if there's a good story attached instead of just missions like this. It's just a matter of personal preference. I think this will be a good game though for those who are into that type of gameplay.

Yeah, Operation Flashpoint is great. I also dislike the intense planning aspect of RainbowSix/RogueSpear, so Op Flashpoint is more fun. Also, three things about OF really stand out to me:

1) Variety of missions. Self-explanatory.

2) The way the enemy AI works and the whole system of interaction. You can actually hide in the middle of a firefight, then flank and whatever. In other games, even Ghost Recon, the enemy has some magical ability to zoom in on you as soon as you fire and starts shooting sometimes thru a wall. Stupid.

3) The graphics. Holy cow, the landscapes are incredible. Just HUGE and aesthetically pleasing. Some of the valley scenes reminded me EXACTLY of real areas of Europe I saw recently. No other game I've played had such perfect outdoor atmosphere.

Well, I haven't played any of the previous Tom Clancy games, so I can't comment on the pre-mission planning; but, according to IGN's review, it's done away with in Ghost Recon.

I kind of like the "one shot, one kill" realism; it really heightens the tension.

ipkevin - I can't give you definite answers to your questions since I've only played the single player mission once, and when I did I just took my Alpha team in and killed all the enemies, which auto-completed the rest of the objectives. But, I think the way you control your inactive teams is through the command interface:

Also (I'm not sure if this is what you meant) the command "select next" switches between different soldiers (of all teams); I'm not sure what the default key is, but just find it in the options menu.

I agree about the sound effects; that was the first thing I noticed.

I just think this game looks to have a great atmosphere.

Trigger - I know how you feel about Duke Nukem Forever; I'm kind of the same way with Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

I was a little confused by this comment. It sounds like you mean Rainbow 6's route/action planning? If this is so, then did you realize that there's an option to accept HQ's (default) plan? There's a default plan which is already spec'd out, so basically, if you wanted to, you just click through 5 or 6 screens (Something like mission breakdown, info, action plan, team selection, equipment selection, team make-up), and get right into the action. It takes about 10 seconds to click through all of those screens if you don't want to change anything. This is what I usually do, not even looking at the default action plan (since the route shows up on your in-game map anyway), except maybe change the equipment selection. Then, I'll usually HOLD all teams, and go in by myself to clear out the level (or at least try to); I consider it more challenging and fun that way.

I've played all of the Rainbow 6 games released so far, and as far as I remember, every one was like this; maybe in the earlier games, you actually had to plot out action routes, and I just don't remember it.

Back on topic, I liked the demo, and like most have noted, the sound was great.

Ha !!! I mock your plans !!!

You haven't lived until you have finished every level using just one person and only a handgun. =)

(Okay, I admit it I lost too many hours of my life playing the R6 series, but hey it has totally been my favorite series.)

Back to the topic though, Ghost Recon is great fun, and should be out shortly if memory serves. While there is no planning, you do still need to put your team together correctly. Though there are defaults included.

It should be noted however that you need to be careful with the team members you select. Say a mission objective calls for explosives to be set. If you lose you guys that have the demo kits, the mission automatically fails, since as with the old R6/RS series, you cannot pickup or use other items from fallen foes/enemies.

I finished the demo mission a few times on veteran, I must admit the new game engine is looking great, especially compared to the always dated looking engine in R6/RS. Though, I never really had a problem with the graphics in either. The sound by far is some of the greatest weapon effects in game. You can hear and feel the power, it is great.

Operation Flashpoint is a great game as well, I have logged some hours into that, but am still no where close to the end. When comparing it to Ghost Recon, the immediate feeling when starting up the GR demo was that it felt like a "R6 version of Operation Flashpoint".

It is a great time if you are into the tac/sim style games.

Rick, nice to see you around!

In case you didn't notice it, I did say in my post that I usually HOLD my entire team, then go in myself.

I'm looking forward to Ghost Recon. I think based on comments here I'll have to pick up Operation Flashpoint too.
