Sony Q2 PS2 sales
Sony reported their second quarter earnings today. Overall, they netted a small loss, but their game division was profitable. More interesting in my mind though are the sales numbers for the PS2.

The 4.62 million figure represents an increase from the 4.3 million from the previous quarter. At that time they predicted that world-wide shipments by the end of this calendar year would go over 20 million. While they didn't care to revise this figure upwards, it's obvious that they're going to do significantly better than that.
I guess we can now see why Sony didn't cut the price of the PS2 in the US. Even in anticipation of the GC and xbox launches, sales have remained strong. It's possible that during this holiday period, PS2 will outsell both xbox and GC combined.

"Shipments of its PlayStation 2 game system totaled 4.62 million units, against 980,000 a year earlier. Accumulated shipments of PlayStation 2 reached 19.57 million units by the end of September"

i wouldnt get your hopes up. PS2 is now old news, the hype is dead, all the kids want the latest and greatest, and that's the xbox or gc. With GC going for ~$100 less, in this economy that is going to sell better than something that costs ~$100 more. Only reason PS2 says were up is because of a couple of games , only other thing PS2 has to look forward to is MGS2, which by the time that comes out may be too late anyways. Expect gamers to put their PS2 for sale all over to raise $$ to get a GC or xbox, thus increasing the supply of PS2 which should result in less PS2 hardware sales.

they have seen an increase in orders and sell thru. also retailers are buying a bunch due to lack of competing system availability. i expect an increase in sales due to great games being released driving sales as well as stores pushing the one system they have.

Sony will be doing fine. They've got a great lineup of games for the next 3 months and will kick serious booty when FF X comes out? I think FFVII was probably the first true system seller for the PSX.

Even if PS2 isn't the "latest and greatest" I think saying that it's time is nearly up....is a way off. And I don't say that because I just bought one. I say it because they games coming out right now are amazing and so is the lineup for the next few months.
I just finished Devil May Cry and it was the best looking games I've seen. It also handles very well. I don't even like Metal Gear but I can't wait for the new one. And when FFX comes I sure it will be amazing.....shame it's on an outdated system huh?
I really look forward to seeing how Sony stands a year from now. As I look forward to seeing how the XBox and GC do. I don't want want any to fail because nothing keeps the biz going like competition. And these 3 should have a pretty good battle.
