I can't believe how badly this place needs SPELL CHECK!

Why?
Spelling checkers are not infallible and, IMNSHO, encourage laziness. Think about all the people that use pocket calculators and have trouble with simple arithmetic.
Aside from this, there is a preview button so you can double check your post and most people I know have spelling checkers on their computers. There is also Spellcheck.net, Spellcheckit.com, this and, er, this.
I believe that there was a "spell check" facility on this site at one point but I don't think it worked out.

I have a much better idea; why don't you just learn to spell things properly? I don't know if your keyboard's defective but, typos aside, I never have a problem with spelling. Maybe you need to get your computer fixed if it keeps making you spell things wrong?
Seriously, though, a spell checker is not a proper alternative to being able to spell correctly in the first place. Time was when they actually taught you at school how to do simple things like write decent English and perform simple maths. Apparently, though, in the age of the pocket calculator and the spelling and grammar checker, literacy and numeracy are strictly optional talents...

TCHJ nailed it. Spelling matters.
Spelling matters, for better or worse, now that people have begun to write letters again, some like this one. Email has increased the number of letters that I write by three to four decimal points. My penmanship is so poor that I must use the uppercase for everything when I use paper instead of electrons.
Homonyms, like there, their and they're, simply have to be understood, as in, "There, there, they're here, they've brought all of their gear." It's a bit of a rhyme.
I prefer my worn out nine year old dictionary. It has a permanent spot on the floor, is quite torn from being dropped and every time I use it, I learn a bit along the way. But even when I get the spelling down, I still have lame grammar and composition. Blade was quite good at laying things out, particularly when he posted a lengthy rampage.
-edit- crappy grammar

I've never seen so many spelling errors in one thread.

Please DON'T put in a spelling checker. The spelling errors are of interest sometimes, and also let us get a glimpse of the person behind the otherwise sterile message.
Removing the spelling errors would be like not letting me see the interviewee's clothing to see if he or she has personally bothered to dress for success or has dressed slovenly.

Seriously, though, this is a good point. It kinda lets you know whether the poster's bothered taking their time over what they've posted, or if they've just banged out the first sentence that managed to make its way from their brain to the keyboard. Posters who are making serious points have a tendency to take their time and make sure their posts are clear and use decent English, and while this isn't everything, in certain circumstances (for example, the few serious debates that actually get going in Other) it gives you a bit of an insight into how seriously the poster is taking the subject.
Of course, there're always some smart arses who always make sure they write properly, no matter how pointless or irrelevant their comments
