I was just cruising the web and found this.

Take it for what it's worth. I'll wait until I see it.

Here is the meat and bones of the article.

Sony has dropped plans to cut the price of the PlayStation 2 by $50 or £50 (depending on territory) across the globe at E3. The current target for the aggressive price drop is thought to be September of this year.

Previously it was whispered that Sony would grab headlines at E3 by slicing $50 off the price of the PlayStation 2 in the US, and £50 in the UK and Europe. But now, reports in this week's MCV suggest that the consumer electronics giant will hold off until Q3 when it will unleash a massive $100/£100 reduction across the globe.

I hope they drop the price soon. It seems like a good idea to drop the price right before the x box comes out.

I want a ps2, please drop the price
What can I say, I am a poor college student

There are actually quite a few good games out for the PS2 depending on what genres you like

Action:
Onimusha
Zone of the Enders

Sports:
SSX
Madden 2001

Fighting:
DOA2: Hardcore
Tekken Tag Tournament

Adventure:
Shadows of Destiny

Strategy:
Ring of Red

And now GT3 is just on the horizon and it looks like it WILL be the true killer app we've all been waiting for. Famitsu scored it 39 out of 40, which is pretty darn good. Of course, you have to like racing. There's Soul Reaver 2 on the horizon as well and I'm sure many others coming in the next few months.

You know, it might be nice if the PS2 were actually readily available at most department stores. I still haven't seen the thing on the shelves except at a couple EB and Funco stores - and even then, only with the extra controller, memory stick, extra game "value pack."

Get the thing to market already Sony! It's been nearly half a year and you still don't see the system heavily stocked at Best Buys, Circuit Cities, Kmarts, Walmarts, or what-have-you.

I've successfully avoided even being tempted to buy one simply because the system isn't easily accessible yet. As soon as I can walk into my local Walmart and see the system sitting on the shelf, then - and only then - will I be tempted to buy the system. In the meantime, I'm perfectly content with my PC.

Anyone know when the rumored re-launch is supposed to occur?

I have seen the PS2 in stock at about 10 different stores including Best Buy and Sears in the last few weeks. I think Sony is starting to catch up. There are still not enough games to warrant the $300 price tag, but I did enjoy Shadow of Destiny and Omnimusha. Zone of Enders was also decent and GT3 will of course be worth getting a system for.

I see PS2s at various Target stores all the time.

Oh, and ATV Offroad Fury is also an excellent game.

Dropping the price still doesn't make it a good system. Unfortunately with the death of the Dreamcast nothing out there seems very interesting. Gamecube will again be a Nintendo kiddie console. PS2 has done nothing to impress me no matter how much I play it, and while Xbox looks good it is already digging itself into the same whole SEGA did (relying more one 1st party support than third party support). Looks like I can be counted out of the current system wars.

Same here. After the Dreamcast, nothing intrests me in the console game. The only thing I have intrest in is the Gameboy Advance.

The word from people at Sony is that they won't drop the price of the system at E3. The reasoning is that since there is no competition to the PS2 currently, cutting the price by $50 or more dollars doesn't accomplish anything. Sony figures that they'll keep the system at $299 until a few weeks before either the GameCube or the Xbox launches (which ever comes first). That way, it'll make people think twice about jumping ship with another system.

yeah I doubt they would cut the price now. I have heard the same online rumors but why do it. the only competition is months away and some areas still are selling out as soon as they hit the shelves.
