You need the ladder to get across. Only in some places, you can't actually see the cross mark, but you can still use the ladder. ign.com has a good walkthrough for it too.
When you're first emerging into the huge dark chamber, if you go to the right, DON'T go into the central chamber (in center of large vertical pipe directly in front of entrance -- I could never get back out. If you go right, you can still pick up a few sodas, but you need to blindly place the ladder in a few spots. The way to get to the next part of the level however, is to the left as soon as you enter the room. You'll need to use the ladder on the x-spot.
