Paramount announces new releases on Blu-Ray for 2008 (inc. There Will Be Blood)

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Paramount unveils initial Blu-ray slate
'Bee Movie,' 'Face/Off' among titles
By Thomas K. Arnold

April 29, 2008, 07:57 PM

Paramount Home Entertainment is getting ready to re-enter the Blu-ray Disc business it abandoned last year just before "Transformers," with an initial slate of catalog titles it will begin rolling out May 20.

Arriving in stores that day are Blu-ray Disc versions of "Face/Off," "Next" and "Bee Movie," a DreamWorks Animation title that was initially supposed to be released in March on HD DVD, the same day as the standard DVD. But when Toshiba threw in the towel on HD DVD in February, those plans were scrapped and "Bee Movie" came out only on DVD.

Two more recent theatrical hits will be released on Blu-ray Disc on June 3, "Cloverfield" and "There Will Be Blood."

Then, on June 24, Paramount will issue its first day-and-date Blu-ray Disc release, "The Spiderwick Chronicles." The film, which grossed $70.6 million in U.S. theaters, will be rolled out on Blu-ray Disc in key international markets, as well, beginning in July.

Also slated for international-market release are "Cloverfield" and "No Country for Old Men," beginning in August.

More titles will follow as the year progresses, said Paramount Pictures worldwide home entertainment president Kelley Avery.

"We will have a strong slate of titles for Blu-ray release throughout the year, worldwide, and are enthusiastic about expanding the format's offerings for a broad consumer audience while delivering an experience that goes beyond what viewers love about DVD," she said.

Paramount initially was one of two studios, along with Warner Home Video, supportive of both next-generation, high-definition optical disc formats. But in August, Paramount became HD DVD-exclusive, reportedly after a $50 million payment from the HD DVD camp.

Of course Paramount releases in their first wave two titles(Face/Off & Next) I already got as Blu-ray imports. At least There Will Be Blood will make a nice addition to my collection. A little disturbing that Transformers is not among the first titles though. This means it could be held back for awhile for marketing reasons.

Crap. This is exactly what I heard before...I had hoped they would add Sweeny to the mix.

Oh well. Blood, Bee and Cloverfield for me.

Figures, I broke down and bought the regular DVD of There Will Be Blood, assuming the Blu-ray was at least a few months away. Ah well, I won't feel the need to watch it again for a while, so I'll hold off for a markdown or sale.

I also find strange that they didn't also include re-issues of their first batch of Blu rays in the upcoming releases. They already have the discs in storage and they only need to increase production.

FINALLY!

Was hoping to hear Zodiac mentioned, but Cloverfield and TWBB will be fine for now.

I can't wait for Shooter to resurface. A member on bd.com, who works at BB, said today that the sku for Blades of Glory BD changed today from "deleted" to "active". So we may start seeing new shipments trickle in.

I wonder if Cloverfield will sport some choice extras, including the stuff from the extra Best Buy disc. Abrams seemed to dig releasing Lost on Blu Ray.

Good news here. Especially the Bee Movie & Cloverfield. Now, give me Star Trek & my journey to HD completion will be semi-complete!

How many Paramount titles were HDDVD exclusive? Off the top of my head I can come up with:

Top Gun
Transformers
Shrek 3
Blades of Glory
Road trip
Anchorman
Old School

Zodiac
Things We Lost in the Fire
Into the Wild
The Kite Runner would've been
Beowulf
The Heartbreak Kid
Stardust
Hot Rod
Star Trek: Original Series Season 1
A Mighty Heart

Road Trip was not released on HD DVD.

Given Transformers wasn't even mention, I'm guessing we'll have to wait until the sequel is about to be released before we see a BD release.

And I co-sign the Zoolander request.

I think Transformers will be released this year, just not until Q4.

I almost decorated my new HP notebook in the cinnamon-roll Ben & Jerry's upon finding out There Will Be Blood is on its way.

In for that and Cloverfield. Have Face/Off on HD DVD. Yeah, I'm bein' a rebel.

After the buzz that Paramount was going to return to Blu-ray with a big "splash" I'm a little surprised that this is the announcement. I'm certainly not complaining, just expected something different based on the rumblings around the internet.

Only major titles that are missing are Transformers, Sweeney Todd and Beowulf. I'm just encouraged by the fact that Paramount has gotten back into the game and their first releases are coming in less than a month.

I'm glad they're coming so soon. Universal's titles aren't until July, right?

I'm happy they're going to put out some that didn't make it to HDM at all like TWBB. If they can release Next and Bee Movie, I'd think they can put out Sweeney Todd too. Hopefully Zodiac and Into the Wild are coming at some point.

Oh, and how about Saturday Night Fever since they cancelled that last year?
