Canadians: Venturer HD-DVD Player (same as A3) $69.97 at Walmart

Get them while they're in stock!

They may still be shelf stickered at $199, but should scan at $69.97.

Comes with 2 free movies in the box, and IS an HD-A3 (takes the Toshiba Firmware).

Just picked one up. Saw it posted at another forum that you frequent The two movies are Perfect Storm and Firewall, and since I have no interest in either, I'll be looking to sell or trade.

As I posted on the other forum, is it worth it upgrading the firmware? What does it do, and are there any risks associated with it?

I am just unpacking mine now, so any advice as to setup or anything else with regards to video or audio?

Lol. I just replied to that question at the other site.

Yes, it's worth it to update the firmware. It improves compatibility with all the latest releases.

How's the build quality on the Venturer? Are they actually made in the same factories as the A3? Or are they el cheapo in durability also?

Even if it did, the rebate is no longer valid (ended Feb 28).

Aside from the faceplate, it IS an A3. Build quality, components, everything.

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the info. I might have to bite and pick one up as a backup. I wonder if Toshiba will make dual BD/HD players in the future? I know they said they'd stop manufacturing HD DVD players, but does anyone think dual format players from them might still be a possibility?

It even takes the Toshiba A3 Firmware. That should tell you all you need to know

I think the chances of Toshiba making dual players is nil. It's over, and they've accepted as much. It will likely be some time before they do make a Bluray player.

Toshiba said they will not be making any BD players!

Toshiba also said, days, maybe hours before their HD DVD death announcement, they were still supporting HD DVD. As did Paramount, as did Warner. Its business.
