Many MGM Anniversary Editions DVDs coming in 2008!!!

The press release for the 90 disc Anniversary set has this small blurb inserted:

Upcoming UA 90th DVD titles to be released in 2008 include “event” anniversaries for UA properties including In the Heat of the Night (40th), Last Tango in Paris (35th), Rain Man (20th), La Cage aux Folles (30th), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (30th), WarGames (25th) and The Thomas Crown Affair (40th), among others.
The last Rain Man DVD was pretty good, but the rest films on the list really need improvement. Hopefully these editions will bring that.

Can we really expect much given their "Anniversary Edition" of Poltergeist?

That was Warner Bros. who aquired it when they bought Turner.

These are going to be released by MGM via Fox.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers just came out! Odd. Wargames I am very excited about.

WarGames is expected doubly since they have that DTV sequel on the way.

Dammit, I just got the IotBS SE for $6.99! I can't see it happening though.

I'll take that Rain Man SE though. The R2 version apparently has two things not on the R1 SE. And what about The Taking of Pelham One Two Three in 16:9 in time for the remake?

My thoughts exactly.

The one I'm most interested in is Last Tango. Even with my meager 4X3 TVs (the biggest of which is 32"), the current transfer looks pretty poor by current standards--lots of visible print damage, scratches, etc.

Hope they can get this cleaned up for the re-release.

Given the history that MGM has of often reissuing titles with just a minor supplement change or just a cover change, I wouldn't get too excited yet. I think they reissued The Graduate about 3 or 4 times before we finally got a decent version. And I've lost track of the different versions of Princess Bride, etc. Some of their other reissues have actually been worse than previous editions (dropping supplements, etc.)

I'd need to know more about what these "Anniversary Editions" entail before I get excited. It could just be a new slipcover for all we know. The inclusion of something like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (which was just re-released a few months ago) makes me doubly skeptical.

La Cage aux Folles (30th)

It would be nice if a set was released that included the two sequels.

You cannot entirely blame MGM, who have been releasing, in the last two years, a) for themselves, b) for Sony and c) for 20th Century Fox. Fox has, surprisingly, been pretty good at making their cash-ins not a rip-off: The Graduate finally got the edition it deserved, Fox succeeded where Sony failed in getting the Leones out on shelves, they upgraded Silence of the Lambs, etc.

And I maintain that people make a bigger deal out of rereleases then they should. Like, there's a new Fog DVD coming out just when The Fog remake is coming out on DVD. Of course it's a cash in and will have nothing of value. Why get worked up over it? And The Graduate was released twice, officially, one with features an one without, and there was no announcement or fanfare for the one with no bonus features.

Oh, I'm not really "blaming" anyone. We're essentially saying the same thing -- not to get too excited about this until we actually know what these new editions mean.

MGM/Sony/Fox/whoever has a history of repackaging the same stuff with new shiny covers. To beat The Graduate example into the ground, MGM is releasing yet another version of this on December 4 (as part of the "Decades" collection). I think it's safe to assume that this doesn't offer any improvements over the 40th Anniversary edition that came out last month.

Sometimes releasing a DVD with new artwork is the only way to keep a good supply of a catalog title on the shelf.

Absolutely... I'm not disputing that. But, again, new artwork is not what everyone seems to be assuming. Everyone shouting "Wargames!" is going to be pretty disappointing if it's the same ol' disc with a new slipcover. And MGM has a strong history of doing just that.

I hope they have larger plans than artwork changes, but the inclusion of Invasion of the Body Snatchers in that list is certainly reason to be less than optimistic about disc improvements.

I'm down with a new Last Tango in Paris. I'm not a big fan of Fox taking over the MGM catalog though.

In for Wargames, it's about time.

Invasion just came out (the 29th anniversary?), I hope that's a mistake and they aren't spending time on another version.
Work on something else like Annie Hall please!

I was under the impression that the re-release of 'The Fog' had a substantially improved picture.
