Xbox 360 HD DVD Drops to $179, 5 Free Movies

From joystiq:

Microsoft has announced a price drop for the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player from $199 to $179, effective as of August 1st in North America. Appearing at Comic-Con in San Diego, the announcement was made amidst promotion for the HD-DVD releases of the film 300 and the cheerleader epic, Heroes.

Not content with just a twenty dollar dip, Microsoft has extended Toshiba's "Perfect Offer" promotion to Xbox 360 owners, awarding five free movies with purchase. The hard part now is choosing between Casablanca and The Dukes of Hazard.

Naturally, the Xbox Live Marketplace wasn't left out in all this news as 300 will be making its way to the service in HD on August 14th, while free content for Heroes will arrive sometime before it's HD-DVD release.

Is King Kong still packaged with it? That would be 6 free movies.

Are the five free movies from the same group of 15?

This is what I am using and it works great. I have two other friends that have it as well and they have never had any issues either.

Is there a list of the 15 movies that you get to choose from?

*Sigh*

This is a bit of a kick in the face considering I got the HD add-on in December and I haven't bought any HD discs since January (I've been waiting to save up until I get my own new HD-TV... so far I've had to use the one in the living room).

I don't care that much about the price drop... it's only $20. It's the 5 free discs.

Maybe I could just go buy a new player, make a copy of the receipt, take the bar code off the box of my old one, send in for the free discs... and return the new player unopened and get a refund.

Anyone know if that would work?

Ugh! Can't believe this! I just got my 360 for my birthday, May 27. So I've only had the add-on a couple of months; I would've LOVED to get some of those free discs. I wonder if there might be a way ...

They are all crappy movies anyway. Why do you think they are free?

No doubt. Especially that poo-burger "Casablanca" . . .

Category B -- Casablanca - Constantine - Dukes of Hazzard
Category C -- Four Brothers - Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Category D -- The Rundown - Blazing Saddles - U2: Rattle and Hum

Not bad movies at all... I must see what I can do to take advantage of this!

Had to update my Adobe Reader to be able to read that pdf.

OK, is the link provided pertain to the 360 add-on as well? If so, it says the HD-DVD player purchase must be from 3/1/07 and 9/30/07.

IF that is true, then I would qualify for the offer.

The PDF is if you bought a Toshiba HD player. The MS one doesn't start until the price drop if I read everything correctly so far.

Ok, quick question, my TV only does 1080i and it only has component so would I get 1080i with the MS player or would the copy protection downgrade the image?

It will output 1080i via component

What a horrible idea! You should be ashamed of yourself!

It should work, I'll probably give it a try.

A $20 drop and 5 free movies is a kick in the face? How about the people who spent $1,000 on a Blu-Ray player to see it for $450 5 months later? THATS a kick in the face.
