Biggest DVD Miss/Mistake Goes to: Paramount/Nickelodeon

I for one feel that Paramount/Nickelodeon are severely missing out on a ton of money by not releasing their classic nicktoons and more of their early 90's nick shows on dvd. Maybe it's just my generation and the circle of friends I hang out in, but we are all severely nostalgic for these shows we grew up on; Rocko, Doug, Salute your Shorts, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Roundhouse, Ahhh! Real Monsters, The Secret World of Alex Mack, and etc. Paramount could capitalize on such nostalgia like they are with the Clarissa and P&P dvd seasons, but they aren't. Personally, I think they are missing out on a huge market of people that would be willing to shell out the money for seasons of these beloved shows of the past. To me, it is one of the biggest mistakes that a company has made when it comes to not releasing certain dvds (second goes to paramount again with the Daria series). I'm going to be a jr in college this fall, and over the past two years (and even in high school), old school 90's nickelodeon would be a topic people would get on every now and then, and everyone would say how they would LOVE for these shows to be out on dvd now-a-days. I just think that Paramount is missing out on something huge here. Any thoughts?

I agree, although I believe season 1 of Are you Afraid of the Dark is available somewhere, just can't remember. I'd also like to see Hey Dude and I'm sure there are some others I can't think of.

I think Disney is also missing out on Gummi Bears on DVD. With Talespin and Darkwing Duck coming out, and ducktales already out, I'm hoping Gummi Bears will eventually make it.

Wait...you must be kidding, right?

They have already released Clarissa Season 1 and Pete and Pete Season 1 and 2. Sales were so low that Clairssa never got a second release, and Pete and Petes last season was delayed and then 'canceled'.

I know! It drives me crazy...there has got to be a market out there for the early 90s Nick' shows rights? I can't believe these releases flopped.

It just makes me sad because it pretty much killed any chance for me owning Salute Your Shorts or Hey Dude. I haven't seen these childhood favorites in years...

Angry Beavers would be an instant buy at my house if they would release it. Probably in volumes or season sets - one of my wife's favorites and as a bonus I actually liked it alot as well (we have quite different tastes for the most part).

We run, we jump,
We swim and play,
We row and go on trips.
But the thing that lasts forever,
Are our dear friendships!

Ug: Camp Anawanna,
ZZ: We hold you in our hearts.
Donkey Lips: And when we think about you,
Budnick: It makes me want to fart!
Ug: It's, 'I hope we never part!' Now get it right or pay the price!

Telly: Now we will share a lifetime of the fondest memories.
Sponge: By the lake of Anawanna,
Dina: Set in the old pine trees.
Michael: Camp Ana...
Budnick: We hold you in our hearts
Ug: But when we think...?
Donkey Lips: This thing came apart.

Think Anawanna!
Speak Anawanna!
Live Anawanna!
Ug!

Salute Your Shorts is the most wanted one of these for me...

I would have been shocked if these shows were a hit on DVD. Current Nickelodeon viewers don't even know these shows existed, and of the people who did watch it when they were kids, most of them wouldn't consider buying them. I wouldn't buy them unless they were really really cheap, and I liked those shows. But how often would I watch them? Certainly less than I did when I was younger. Are they good shows? Yes! Is there a market for them? Not much of one.

Edit: Looking on Amazon now I see the first season of Pete & Pete is only $13.99, now I'm thinking of ordering it.

The reasons the DVD releases flopped is because Paramount treated these releases like shit, as if they had some sort of obligation that they didn't want to fulfill (which could be said about quite a few of their releases).

While the transfer issues I didn't really care about (most of these shows were shot on video and I am sure the master tapes have probably seen better days), we at least got some extras. However, how were people supposed to know these releases exist when Paramount didn't advertise them?

People come to my house often and once they notice my three Nickelodeon releases and ask, "These are on DVD!??!" While the Rewind Collection has done great merchandise wise as one can notice with the Hot Topics across the country being filled to the brim with t-shirts with the "Camp Anawanna" or the Double Dare logo on them, but there was no awareness put on Paramount's end that these releases existed.

On top of that, nobody could find them on release day. No retailers had them in stock. I nearly paid full SRP for Clarissa and the first season of Pete and Pete on street date at Tower Records, but I didn't pick up the second season of Pete... until the DDD 20% sale last June as nobody in Vegas had it for sale. How the fuck do you expect something to sell when you're not supplying it to retailers?

I'd love to see the final season of Pete and Pete to get a DVD release, but I'm not expecting shit out of Paramount at this moment.

When Pete & Pete Season 1 came out, neither Target or Circuit City had it in stock. None of the people who worked there knew what I was talking about.

Wal-Mart had three copies, so I bought one there. Pete & Pete season 2, I couldn't find in stores at all. No place had it. I had to order it at DeepDiscountDVD.

Is season 3 outright fully cancelled? Everything I've read says it was postponed and there is no idea when it will be coming out, due to a shake up with a division at Paramount.

I wanted to get Clarissa Explains It All and Pete and Pete but the only places I ever saw them was in stores like Suncoast and other places that sell at or close to SRP and so too expensive for my tastes. If I ever see them cheaper I may pick them up.

Would Paramount/Nick even look to see if anything is high in the votes on TVShowsonDVD? Would our votes there even really matter?

How would one go about emailing/writing to them to request that their 90s shows get on dvd?

I think the only show I ever really like on Nickelodeon was Rocko's Modern Life. I'd definitely pick that one up.

I voted for Daria like....so long ago....and still, nothing.

The only show that my vote/signature even mattered was F&G, although that's a DAMN good show for it to matter with. Ya win some ya lose some I suppose.

Mind if I ask how old you are? As I have never even heard of any of those shows, much less seen any of them (I'm 33).

Okay, I thought I was missing something - instead, I just came of age in a different time (which I am in no way nostalgic for) - though I love stuff like The Tick & Ren&Stimpy, which were from this same era... but I guess those were more geared towards college-age kids than this stuff was.

I don't think it's a mistake. Most people wouldn't buy them. I've downloaded episodes of Salute Your Shorts and the show wasn't nearly as great as I had remembered. You just grow out of things. I like having my great memories than present day letdowns.

The one I care about is Pete & Pete. It holds up amazingly well and is legitimately good in its own right, not just for nostalgia's sake. It must have sold well enough to release season two, so just dump the final season out already!
