DDD lets 3rd party firms have access to your credit card.
I just emailed this letter to DDD.
______________________________________
Today I received marketing material which included a "check" for $2.50 which if signed would sign me up for a year of "PC Safety Plus" offered by a firm called Trilegiant. After a month the credit card I used for my last purchase with you would be automatically billed $119.99 for 11 more months and then $129.99 annually.
I do not appreciate that your passing my credit card and personal information onto a third party.
I do not appreciate a mailing with the wording "check enclosed" on the outside being sent to me. Since I was not expecting this mailing and if it had been intercepted and cashed I would unknowingly then be automatically signed up for a unwanted service and would have then had to cancel said service once a entry showed up on my credit card statement.
I wish to have my information removed from any databases and lists that you use for any purpose other than fulfilling transactions with your company.
Please confirm that my issues have been noted and this action taken.

How do you know it was DDD?
Not doubting your claims at this point, but I'm curious. I would be austounded if DDD (or any company) actually did knowingly give away CC info. Name and address, sure, I can believe.
But mainly I wonder how you have it tracked to DDD. Unless you used your address/credit card for nothing else, your info could have been obtained many numerous ways. My bank sends me stupid shit like that all the time (checks that upon cashing enroll me in some stupid program).

It appears that your credit card info was not passed on to anybody. If you cashed the check, that would then be the authorization for them to get your credit card info from DDD. And if your check had been "intercepted and cashed" without your knowledge - well, sounds as if you already have some security issues!

I got it too, but my check was $2.50.
It clearly had a the DeepDiscountDVD logo (shark) and the words DeepDiscountDVD on it.
I thought it was a refund for some class action suit until I actually read it.
Guess who's not getting any more money from me now??

I got the $2.50 check thing as well. Its giving me second thoughts about making future orders.
DDD: Since one or more of your staff monitor this forum, could you give us an explanation of why your customers are receiving these solicitations ? While its understandable that businesses are always keeping an open mind to new ways to increase revenues, I would much rather pay a little extra for my DVDs if need be, rather than know my personal information was released to a third party to boost the bottom line.

Sharing my address with a third party company is bad enough but allowing them access to my credit card information is much worse. I will most certainly be using single use credit card numbers for any future transacations with this company.
I did get the following response to my email today, it seems like everyone needs to contact them and opt out. They should have changed thier wording to read "your billing information will only be sent to Trilegiant if you or anyone who intercepts the check cash the check that was sent to you"

We apologize for the inconveinence this may have caused. It is our understanding that your billing information will only be sent to Trilegiant if you cash the check that was sent to you. Please be advised that we have removed you from our data base for future promotions. Once again, we apologize for the inconveinence this may have caused.--

I've haven't gotten this one, but I've gotten them from many other companies. I always just threw it away and never worried about it.
Assuming someone else got your check, they would probably have to spend a little more than $2.50 to come up with some ID to get it cashed.
I do think the title should be changed to something like DDD lets 3rd party firms have access to your credit card if you sign up for the 3rd party services. It's not some scam that's going on.

I wrote a check to pay a monthly fee, it was misdelivered and another firm mistakenly cashed it without any problem although thier name had no similarity to the orignal payees.

what I meant when I said "you only get those things if you click" ... I mean you're only actually CHARGED anything if you click the link and join (I *THINK* the link automatically made you join even if you didn't type anything, but I'm not positive) but even this check thing, you're only actually enrolled if you deposit it, but still, it's a pain in the ass, but maybe DDD is mailing these because you're a customer (then can mail you crap being you're a customer) I think, and only pass your info along (or it gets passed along) if you deposit the check? ..

So far I haven't gotten one of these checks from DDD, but if I do it'll go right into the shredder.
I used to get checks like this all of the time (but not from DDD) about three of four years ago. Probably about five or six a month. Most of them were from my credit card companies trying to rope me into some shady program. I destroyed them all.
I also used to get these checks for rather large amounts of money... up to a few thousand dollars... around Christmas. That was some kind of racket where they were offering me a "loan" that I would have to pay back with excessive interest. I have no idea who sent those, and I very nearly filed a compaint with my post office.
Seems like a pretty scummy practice.

I haven't ordered from DDD in several months, and I got this $2.50 check yesterday. I was suspicious from the start because it came presorted mail (ie: junk mail). A real check would be sent first class mail. The whole thing was incredibly misleading because it's not really from DDD, but rather someone else trying to sell something completely unrelated to DVDs. I wonder how much DDD was paid for their database of customers.

I work at a bank, and some lady tried to deposit this today.
I then asked her if she knew what she was depositing, and she had no idea.
She just thought it was a refund.

I am glad that I'm not the only one who was disgusted by this "offer." Truly repugnant. I expect this kind of malarky from credit card companies, but not one that I have done thousands of dollars of business with over the past couple of years.

I recieved the check as well, and i never clicked on any links from DDD. I'm not as angry as some of the people here, but it certainly does make me reconsider ordering from them.

I can certainly understand the disgust and unhappiness over this, but the way I look at it is that it's just the price of doing business in this day and age. Maybe that means I've all but given up on thinking I have any control over shared information, but ah well. Unless all you do is pay cash for everything, your info is going to be out there, and going to be profitted from. And even then, in theory, you still have your bank who has your info...
On the other hand, I called a number as pointed out by someone around here on a credit card application to have it so they can't send them to me anymore, and after that, I get almost no junk mail at all! Between that, the do not call list, and the privacy statement I sent in dealing with my mortgage, I've been living a quiet, soliciter-free life!
