The Searchers SE - June 13

The newest edition of home media retailing reports that The Searchers will be released on June 13th in a new special edition as well as on HD DVD. Warner Bros. reports that the cost of restoring the classic western was $600,000 but was worth the effort to present a new SE version of one of the studio's first ever DVD releases in 1997, which according to George Feltenstein, SVP of theatrical catalog marketing, was "Pretty much an Abomination". The article also reports on the 14 disc Superman set with a Richard Donner cut of Superman II and the upcoming Stanley Kubrick set which will feature the unedited international version of eyes wide shut as well as the shining, a clockwork orange and 2001.

This is awesome news, about time a good release of this came to DVD. Warner constantly amazes me with the quality & quantity of great classic DVD releases.

I doubt it, but does anyone have any idea what any extras might be on this DVD?

While I'm VERY happy with this news, and will pick this up the day it's released...to call the 1997 release an "abomination" is certainly being overly dramatic on George Feltenstein's part. The transfer was lifted from the restored laserdisc version of the early 90s, and as such, was in excellent shape. The word "abomination" should be linked to the current version of 'The Quiet Man', with it's horrible image. Now there's a film that is screaming for a re-release.

Couldn't agree more. Also, what about "Outland"? That is the WORST DVD transfer EVER and desperately needs a re-release.

Maybe the old DVD really is bad in comparison to the new restoration.

Anybody know if the HD-DVD release is going to carry the same extras as the SD-DVD 2-Disc Special Edition?

ALRIGHTY!!! Would be great if the entire box set was released on this date...not just 'The Searchers - SE'. I'm really looking forward to finally seeing a widescreen version of 'The Wings Of Eagles'!

I want Cheyenne Autumn, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache. I wonder if these will be released seperately?

I just picked up the current DVD of The Searchers a week or so ago (just before learning about the SE, of course), and after watching it, I wouldn't say the transfer is an "abomination". The DVD has a decent anamorphic transfer. I did see some room for improvement, though; there was one scene in particular where the colors kept shifting. While I did enjoy the movie (sought it out after seeing it was so highly acclaimed) I don't think I'll be double dipping.

This is great news. I've only seen a few of them and wouldn't mind checking the rest out for the right price. Or are some of these terrible movie?

John Wayne fans are certainly happy this morning. Not only is this Warner box set on the way, but Paramount and Universal ones as well. All coming by June '06...

I've never seen 3 Godfathers or The Long Voyage Home, but the rest are all great. The Searchers is a masterpiece. Stagecoach, Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are all bona fide Western classics. They Were Expendable is a solid film that definitely won't disappoint if you're a John Wayne buff or a fan of classic War movies (or both like me). The Wings of Eagles is a lot of fun too, but I'd call it a good film, not a great one like the others.
