LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It's Christmas in July. Warner Home Video is jumping the gun on the holidays by announcing the November 8 DVD release of five classic holiday movies, all of them new to DVD.

The titles -- "Boys Town," "A Christmas Carol," "Christmas in Connecticut," "The Nun's Story" and "The Shoes of the Fisherman" -- come with an assortment of special features, including vintage shorts, featurettes, period newsreels and cartoons.

"Boys Town" (1938), which won Spencer Tracy a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, comes with the 1941 sequel "Men of Boys Town," a 1939 newsreel, the vintage short "The City of Little Men" and a promotional featurette on the real-life Boys Town organization.

"A Christmas Carol" (1938), with Reginald Owen as Scrooge, includes the shorts "Jackie Cooper's Christmas Party" and "Judy Garland Sings Silent Night," along with the classic Oscar-nominated cartoon "Peace on Earth."

"Christmas in Connecticut" (1945), a comedy starring Barbara Stanwyck, includes the vintage Oscar-winning short "Star in the Night."

The Audrey Hepburn starrer "The Nun's Story" (1959), which earned eight Oscar nominations, comes with the original theatrical trailer only.

And "The Shoes of the Fisherman," with Anthony Quinn as a newly freed Russian political prisoner who becomes pope, comes with a featurette of the same name.

Three of the titles -- "Boys Town," "A Christmas Carol" and "Christmas in Connecticut" -- also will be available in the three-disc "Warner Bros. Holiday Collection" gift set.

Looks like I'll be dumping my Christmas Carol VHS on eBay in the next week or two. That sucker fetches fat cash; gotta sell it before word gets out on the DVD release. I've always seen that as a vastly inferior version, but I'm there, anyway.

Yah, this should be great. Boys Town has been on my list for a while. Christmas in Connecticut is one that people always ask about around the holidays...so i'm happy.

Boys Town is a Warner property. Warner owns the pre-1986 MGM library. Sony just purchased MGM and thus the remainder of its library which includes the post-1986 MGM titles along with the Orion, PolyGram and United Artists libraries that MGM reacquired control of after buying out of their 1990 12.5 year home video distribution deal with Warner back in 1999.

Sorry, I guess that was a bit convoluted. To make it clearer (hopefully):

Sony just bought MGM. MGM's library consists of the post-1986 MGM catalog, plus the pre-1996 PolyGram, and the entire Orion and United Artists catalogs. Previously, Warner controlled home video distribution rights on many of these titles as the direct result of a disastrous 1990 deal that granted them these rights for a term of 12.5 years in exchange for $125 million in financing. MGM bought their way out of this deal in 1999, thus regaining full rights to these titles. The pre-1986 MGM catalog, which includes Boys Town, is still owned by Warner.

I'm thrilled to see the '38 version of, A Christmas Carol coming to DVD, I prefer the '51 film, but this film is still great fun to watch and if it's including the MGM short, Peacce On Earth, that's even better news! Boys Town and Christmas In Connecticut will also be welcome additions to the collection.

Has there been any update on when A Nun's Story and The Shoes of the Fisherman are suppose to come out? I haven't seen it listed as having a date yet.
