I tried searching for a thread like this because I remember seeing one a while ago but couldn't find one.

Anyone want to recommend some good Dolby Digital and DTS tracks for someone getting a system for the first time.

I'll check out Saving Private Ryan DTS and Episode I for the Pod Race since I heard they are two great movies to showcase.

I would recommend Eagles - Hell Freezes Over DTS DVD. It is awesome, and you won't regret buying it.

DTS
1. Apollo 13 - the launch sequence is tight!
2. Jurassic Park 2 - not as interesting a story as the 1st but I think the DTS sound effects on this one are much better.
3. The Haunting - again, the story is questionable, but in the very beginning there is a passage that will test your subwoofer to the limit. The track gets to ~ 8-12Hz! This scene will rattle your house GUARANTEED!
4. U-571 - because of reason #3 above. Your neighbors will hate you.
5. Pirates of the Caribbean - very nice soundtrack throughout.

5. The Rock: Criterion - for whatever reason (and there was a thread several years ago) the DD soundtrack sounds better than the DTS one. Oh yeah, and the story kicks ass!

Almost all above is mandtory for anyone who is into HT sound. This isn't in any order but here's mine:

1. - Saving Private Ryan - DTS - The beginning and ending. Besides sound if this doesn't stir some emotion then your brain dead.

2. - Titan A.E - An animated flick that's not in the same league as Toy Story or Ants but sound wise it's in the top (5) period. Not a bad story either.

3. - U-571 - the "Depth Charge" chapter 15 is a sub workout. Turn it up but make sure nothing breakable is around.

4. The Haunting - Very low and errie bass through out. Watch this turned up with the lights out at night and it gives your house the creeps.

5. Jurassic Park - Nothing beats the sound of loud footsteps and big roars from big dinosaurs. One is still a favorite but Three has some pretty good stuff too.

6. - Gladiator - The clinging and banging of swords and shields oh yea!!

7. - Eagles Hell Freezes Over - Whether you like them or not still one of the best sounding concert DVD's around.

8.- Don Henley Inside Job - "Boys of Summer" and "Sunset Grill" hasn't sounded this good in years.

9. - LOTR The Return of the King - Sound and Special Effects at it's best.

10. - Terminator 2 and Star Wars Box Set - Blazzing guns with one and the "wooonnn" sound of a lightsaber in another. Now that's entertainment!!

"Die Another Day" had an awesome DTS I believe track and made the movie that much better with it.

Also, "Open Range" had some really good scenes, though I didn't care for the movie that much.

Check out the DD track on DaD, sounds better than the DTS.

I'll toss in Beastie Boys Video Anthology Criterion for an awesome DD 5.1 experience.

Oh how could I forget this one! I wanted this disc for so long and it's been a favorite of mine since I got it.

And hey, someone eles likes Titian A.E. I thought I was the only one.

I've always liked it except that Bluth made the non-humans too Saturday-Cartoon-ish. To me it seemed an unnecessary distraction to an otherwise great flick. Soundtrack rocked, though

Ditto for Pearl Harbor.

Best DD 5.1:

Around the World in 80 Days (1956 version) - Yes, it's an older movie, you won't believe how active and fresh the audio sounds. The film was originally released with 6-track magnetic sound, which explains why the 5.1 track has so much life to it.

Best DTS:

Fantasia - despite it being censored (30 seconds) and the narration being redubbed, the 5.0 conversion of the Fantasound soundtrack is wonderful.

Checked out a couple scenes so far and loving the new surround sound , wish I had it earlier. I'll rent some of the movies mentioned Monday and see how they sound.
