My wife and I went to see ROTK on the big screen this afternoon; actually, it was the first time we had been to a movie theater in at least a good year (and for justified reasons).

During and after this experience, we were reminded AGAIN why we dislike spending good money to see a movie amongst people who have no courtesy or respect for other peoples' enjoyment in a movie theater. In this situation, there were three adolescent boys sitting across the aisle from us who were eating their popcorn quite loudly, and wrestling with their M&Ms wrappers the entire 3.5 hrs., echoing their rudeness across the entire theater. To make matters worse, their parents were directly behind them, not saying a word. That does not say very much for the parents, but that's another story.

Very surprisingly to me, nobody else in the theater hushed them or looked over, attempting to enlighten them of their rudeness. Nobody but my wife. She "Ssshhh" 'd them twice, to no avail, their parents completely oblivious to the annoyance their offspring were causing.

I am not stating that all adolescents behave in this manner at the movie theaters, as we all know adults are just as guilty.

People talking above whisper level, your seatback constantly being kicked or pushed, popcorn crunching, loud candy wrappers, the list goes on and on...you get the idea.

Do you actually enjoy the movie-going experience? What do you do when confronted with these situations?

i have had no major problems at the movie theaters. I did have one bitch sitting next to me telling her friend all of the movie to scary movie. (oh this part is great, this part is sick) because she saw it the night before.

When confronted with these ass clowns I usually tell them to shut their pie hole and/or move seats.

The problem is going on weekends. Or at leaast, weekend nights. In my area, about all there is to do besides sit hom and get drunk is go to the movies or go out to eat somewhere. So of course, all the kids end up at the theater friday and saturday night. It's like that just about anywhere and any popular movie is loaded with them. Sometimes it's ok but usually it's loaded with 5 of 6 groups of Deluxe_247 wannabes who always end up out of control.

Now, 9 times outta 10, we go on week nights and find other things to do on the weekends. Kind of a shame but there's nothing you can really do about it

This very reason is why I almost never go to see movies at the theater anymore. Too many, loud, annoying young people at the theater. The only film I went too lately that I was happy with was The Passion. Saw it twice, but then again, this is not the type of movie young punk teenagers would go to and make comments (I hope not!). When I saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre last year, OMG, it was absolutely terrible. After someone got killed or hurt, these group of kids would go, "ddayyyyuummm". It was so annoying I almost walked out, but then again I paid the money for the movie, so why should I leave?

They need movie theater police in all theaters. Anytime someone is an annoyance, escort them, or physically remove them from the premises.

you have to kind of expect that for a horror movie. i highly suggest you stay away from dawn of the dead. lets just say when the first zombie attacked, everyone was up and screaming, and talkin to the screen "no no, don't do that, that bitch is crazy doin that shit". also, when extreme gore hit the screen (and the first time a zombie was ran over by a car), everybody cheered on.

My problem has been in the past and was just this weekend again, and no I am not racist or anything, but african american women when in groups of 2 or more just have to talk during the whole movie! It happens at least every other few weeks. I even had two of them next to me talking during the Passion. How can you see a movie while reading and still talk about other stuff?

Of course, you get kids screaming every once in a while. I dont mind the old people who occasionally have to ask one or the other what was just said, I understand that. But talking about other things during the movie or talking ON THE CELL phone while the movie is going is crazy.

The best one in the past was when my and mom went to see an advance screening of MARS ATTACKS way back when and the lady behind us kept saying "Who would make such a terrible film? This movie is horrible! This movie makes no sense and could never happen!" No SHIT! My mom never gets annoyed but told her about half way thru, "Thanks for the review ebert." It was great!

In Chicago the best thing to do if you want to go to the movies on a weekend at night is go to the downtown city not the suburbs. All the kids who have cars are not going to pay $$ for downtown parking, so they head to the suburban malls.
Plus they know there's not going to be people their age in the downtown movie theaters.

I love going to the movies during the day and being 1 of like 2 people there. I went over my Xmas break and saw 21 Grams and then Cold Mtn right after, and was totally alone at both, and it was great. Best movie experience I've ever had (and not due ot Cold Mtn).

i understand bitching when people talk and use cel phones but unwrapping candy and chewing popcorn? uh...what else are they suppose to do? absorb the popcorn through their skin silently using osmosis?

No problems here. I guess it's cause I go to watch the movie and focus on that rather than looking out for and listening for what everyone else is doing. Ate popcorn too loud? Gimme a break man.

Except when that one other person in the theater sits behind you, then during the movie, puts a gun to your head and demands your money. Happened here at a theater in my city not too long ago. Now there's one rude and irritating person! Trying to watch a movie and they want your money.

Ugh! I know what he means. Most people chew [food in general] really, really loud. Call me classically trained, but I pay attention to how I eat, and make sure I'm not smackin' the gums. If you just take small bites, it's not even something you have to think about. It's when you take a big bite or a big gulp that your mouth starts making really loud noises. It's HUGE pet-peeve of mine when people don't know how to eat, and just stuff their face as fast as possible.

However, I understand that people are like that, and just ignore it. It is a constant thing. It never actually stops during any busy movie. But I only notice it if the movie sucks. Otherwise, the movie seems more important that peoples hog-ish eating habits.

Oh, and I very rarely eat in theaters. Sometimes I get a small soda or coffee (if I'm nappy); but that's about it.

It may not work in your area, but I've found the best solution to this problem is going to the theater very early on the weekend (if your theater runs 11AM or 12PM shows). The obnoxious-types don't usually seem to come out until later in the day. There is one exception to this rule - and that's in the case of a Disney, G-Rated or a film particularly aimed towards kids. In this case, pay full price and go to the latest possible showing - most parents don't want to pay full price for themselves and pay for their kids, so they'll go to an early show.

When I saw The Sixth Sense the first time, there was a group of gang-banger types down near the front row doing a "thug-life" type comentary the whole time.

Then, and this was really weird, during one of my many cinema viewings of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I kept hearing this constant whispering. Turns out, some guy a few rows over was reading the subtitles out loud to his movie companion! Now, this wasn't some 4-year-old kid, but a young man. Maybe he was retarded or something and couldn't read, but still... Eventaully, about an hour in, he gave up and they watched silently.

I'll second the notion of going to the earliest possible show on a weekend ... it seems the loud, obnoxious adolecents cannot get out of bed and get their jeans positoined to cover only half of their ass in time for a noon show.

I would actually get annoyed if somebody shushed me for eating. Why didnt you just move seats? ROTK has been out for 3 months, I seriously doubt it was a sold out show.
