Il Mare (Korean version-16/9 DTS)-inside look

I am aware that a lot of people love this film around here so:

per dvdasian:

based on all the excellent reviews I think I will pick it up myself.

I got my copy in the other day from DVDAsian. The packaging is excellent, there's a little magnet on each side that holds each side together.

Here are some information regarding this new release, and a comparison with the Japanese version, which does not have English subtitles

looks like people are not speaking too highly of the video quality....some pretty bad sub quality as well!!

Perhaps I should reconsider....there are too many other Euro films I have on order. Though I have to admit that from what I have read on the net and the package of this film.....I was ready to place an order.

I mentioned this in the other Il Mare thread about this release I think, but anyway - I was quite content with the Spectrum release from awhile ago. The subtitles didn't really bother me either. Supposedly, they reworked the subtitles on this new set and it is supposed to have an improved picture over the original Spectrum dvd. I doubt I'm picky enough to notice that this new release isn't quite as good as the Japanese set with no subs. Cuz I looked at the sample stills from both DVDs after ordering this and it didn't upset me in the slightest. I can't wait till it arrives (my order is being held up waiting for one dvd that got pushed back).

If you liked romances like The Shop Around the Corner & Sleepless in Seattle w/ a touch of Somewhere in Time (sorry, lame comparisons, but those are off of the top of my head), then i'd guess that Il Mare would be a good blind buy for you. FWIW, i liked it. my only gripe, which could be said for almost any film, is that the translation for the subs could've been better. i'm being nit-picky here, but i just wish the S.E. could've had a plasic slip case.

Okay, I ordered this and My Sassy Girl. Hopefully they're worth the 50 some dollars.

Wow, I'm glad I bought these movies. I really loved My Sassy Girl, and Il Mare was very good also. The picture quality for Il Mare seemed rough, but that might be due to the low budget of the film. I didn't notice too much dust or scratches after the first couple minutes. I watched the movie with subs on to see their quality, and they weren't that bad. It was a good translation of what was being said in Korean (even if the grammar was a bit bad), and I only noticed a few spots where the translation was spotty. I really enjoyed it, and if anyone else is looking for a good, understated romance film, check this one out.

I just order Il Mare: SE. After all the talk I felt like I have been locked up in a closet for years...

Cheers

Yup. I thought the classic was a lot better than My Sassy Girl.

By looking at the pictures in this post, I think that version of Il Mare is region 3. The oversea version that you saw @ YesAsia is the R3HK version made by EDKO. This is the version that I have, cause I have read that the R3K DVD of Il Mare had subtitling problems. The Edko release does have subtitling problems in a particular scene where the subtitles get run off the screen. Other than that, I was happy with that DVD.

The cheapest place to get Il mare is probably $20 for the re-release by Spectrum.

My Tutor Friend is quite good... and Oh! Brothers is also good (but not a romance). My Wife is a Gangster is also good. Greatest Expectations was pretty good for a recent romantic comedy.

My mom is in Korea right now, and I asked her to pick up Classic and Ditto for me, but I couldn't think of anything else for her to get. If there's one (or two) more films to add to that list, what would they be?
