I will second 1999. Consider:
Sixth Sense
Matrix
Fight Club
Being John Malkovich
American Beauty
Magnolia

I mean, the first four there are in my top 10 ever, and AB and Mag squeak into my top 30.

1939 was great. Some poeple argue that 1937 was the best year of Hollywood, I don't know about that.

1998 was one of the worst years while I've been alive

1960-1963 were GREAT years

Ed Wood
Nobody's Fool
Forrest Gump
Clerks
Heavenly Creatures
The Last Seduction
Natural Born Killers

1994, 1995, and 1999 are all strong to quite strong

2002 actually wound up producing a lot of good films as well.

I agree. Compared to '00 and '01, 2002 was very decent. Just look at the Oscar noms. There really aren't any that stick out as "why the hell did that get nominated?"

I'm pretty sure the most laughter I ever heard in a movie theater was during the preview for Airplane.

Re: your Favorite movie year?

1989: still remember this year so vividly as it had a lot of great summer movies, plus it was my first time ever to subscribe to a magazine...PREMIERE (the US one, not the French) nonetheless which featured their summer preview. Since then, I got every single copy til they ceased US publication in 2007.

1989 gave us:
Batman
Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade
Dead Poets Society
License to Kill
Back to the Future 2
The Abyss
Do the Right Thing
Ghostbuster 2
Say Anything
Lethal Weapon 2
Born on the 4th of July
Black Rain
Sea of Love
John Woo's The Killer
