3) Fahrenheit 9/11
4) Deep Throat
5) JFK
6) The Last Temptation of Christ
7) The Birth of a Nation
8) Natural Born Killers
9) Last Tango in Paris
10) Baby Doll
11) The Message
12) The Deer Hunter
13) The Da Vinci Code
14) The Warriors
15) Triumph of the Will
16) United 93
17) Freaks
18) I Am Curious (Yellow)
19) Basic Instinct
20) Cannibal Holocaust
21) Bonnie and Clyde
22) Do the Right Thing
23) Kids
24) Caligula

If anyone wants the mag's explanation of the controversy, feel free to ask and I'll type it up. I think most of the films are obvious, although others (i.e. Aladdin) aren't so much.

i'd say it's a fine list. there's only 25 spots so this most certainly is going to miss a few. but it's a case of, damned if you do damned if you don't, i would think.

only thing i might think of is something like crash or some other cronenberg or david lynch movie.

I Spit On You Grave?
Straw Dogs?/The Wild Bunch?
Un Chien Andalou?
And at least 2 or 3 Pasolini or Fassbinder films?
How can you compile a list of controversial films without John Waters!

Some of these titles, like Basic Instinct, The Deer Hunter are more notorious than controversial. I remember The Warriors causing controversy because of it's supposed endorsement of gang activity.

No prob. Although I'm a little surprised to see that their explanation for #20 did not have one peep of animal cruelty mentioned.

Controversy = Amount of press given to them.

Not a bad list but I don't know what the point is of ranking controversy.

The omission of any Bunuel really diminishes this list.

L'Age d'Or (The Golden Age)
Las Hurdes (Land without Bread)
Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned)
Nazarin
Viridiana
... among others.

You think more than 1% of EW readers know about Ken Park or Brown Bunny? Or Luis Buñuel?

Seriously. How can it be "most controversial" is the vast majority of people have never heard of it. I know all 25 movies on that list but I have never heard of many of the suggestions here. Are you all just trying to show that you know foreign films? Congrats!!

I would have put Brokeback Mountain on the list. Also, wasn't Philadelphia fairly controversial when it came out or am I imagining that?

A constant and close EW reader should know the Brown Bunny actually. They mentioned it in a few issues.

Well, beyond popular culture, doesn't a filmmaker like Buñuel merit some word for openly flouting Franco's facist regime? Or criticizing Catholic hypocrisy? Or having to leave his own country because of his work?

Land without Bread predated Farenheit 9/11 by 70 years in terms of incendiary documentaries. L'Age d'Or sparked near-riots at its screenings. Los Olvidados depicted the viciousness and disenchantment of the poor and young 40 years before Kids. Hell, just mention Un Chien Andalou for its opening scene... anything!

This is just another list, and normally I don't get into what's on or what's not on most lists, but no Buñuel is just puzzling.

What was so controversial about Aladdin. Wasn't that a Walt Disney animated movie?

Brokeback Mountain was not controversial. There was an extremely small group of people that had an issue with it, but there were no protests, no organized campaign, et. al.
