I just saw it,it's huge and in silver color.The price is damn expensive around JPY398,000 and they already have Maxell HD-DVD-R on display.They were suppose to lauch it for the World cup but got delayed.The good news is that it's now here.

Looks glorious, but I'm confused on one issue: how do you get an HD signal to the unit?
Using Babelfish's translator, it appears that the video only inputs are composite video, S-video, Co-Ax, or Firewire. No component input, DVI, or HDMI inputs.
That would imply (to me) that you couldn't run an HD signal from a D* or E* box, or many cable boxes (unless they have firewire output enabled).

That's pretty standard, really; if you want to record HD material, you pretty much have to use Firewire. You cannot record from satellite. Your cable company has to make a Firewire-capable box available to you upon request, but I don't believe every box has to have Firewire capability. (Meaning that they may offer a standard STB with Firewire and a DVR without, so if you want to be able to do both, you may need two boxes.)

Guess you guys have never seen a big component before? That's half the size of the current Denon 580x receiver, get real. It's only as big as my DVDp, although almost twice as heavy.

Incidentally - someone at AVS says they spoke to Toshiba at a show while they were looking at this unit and Toshiba confirmed that TruHD 5.1 decoding is coming with a firmware update. This would be very good news indeed.

The new machine combines an HD DVD burner with a one-terabyte hard disk and can record and store up to 130 hours of high-definition broadcasts.
The product is a key element of Toshiba's battle against rival Sony Corp. to establish the standard for next-generation DVD technology. Sony and its allies are pushing an alternative technology called Blu-ray.
Toshiba launched HD DVD players in Japan in March, and in the United States in April. Sony plans to begin selling personal computers equipped with Blu-ray drives later this month.
Toshiba said last month the RD-A1 recorder will carry a suggested price tag of $3,470. The electronics maker hopes to sell 10,000 recorders by the end of 2006, company spokeswoman Junko Furuta said. It was unclear when the product will be launched overseas.
Sony has been selling Blu-ray recorders since 2003 in Japan, but prices have been high and consumer adoption limited.
