Toshiba and the first HD DVD recorder "RD-A1" in the world are put on the market on July 14. For -2 layers HD DVD-RIt is 398,000 yen equipped with 1TB HDD.
Toshiba Corporation puts HD DVD/HDD recorder "RD-A1" on the market on July 14. The price is 398,000 yen.
RD-A1 develops by the "VARDIA" brand as the first HD DVD recorder in the world. The code name is "Providence. "HDD of 1TB is installed, and the digital broadcasting recording and the move to HD DVD-R(15GB) are possible. The recording reproduction of two layers HD DVD-R(30GB) is supported. The DVD-RAM record of the cartridge type is also possible corresponding to digital broadcasting recording/move to DVD-RAM/R/RW by the SD resolution. The drive is made by Sony NEC.
About the correspondence of the Ca type to HD DVD-RW「Because the standard has not been fixed, it is undecided. It is possible to correspond by the farm improvement etc. or the examination is advanced. 」It says. HD DVD pre-recorded cassette on the market and the DVD video can be played.
The tuner is equipped with the ground/BS/110 ℃ S digital and analog ground. each of one systemIt is possible to record digital/analog and simultaneously. Newly developed "RD engine HD" corresponding to HD DVD is installed. Recording is MPEG-2 alone, and it doesn't equip it with the encode function of H.264 and VC-1.
As for the function related to recording, it is "A double recording function that is almost equal to RD-XD92 in software, digital is omitted" (Toshiba DM Co. digital AV division DAV product planning part product planning charge group Choucataoca Hideo), and SKYPerfecTV!. The synchronization function with the tuner etc. are installed.
It is said that it will concentrate on the succession of a past DVD property as a high-speed dubbing can be done as the recorded high-definition television program is edited in each frame, the DVD data of VR mode/video mode recorded in the past is written in HDD besides the playlist making and the move can be done, it returns, and re-encode doesn't exist on the HD DVD-R disk.
The design "Flarmarshashi of the Parthenon type (director Shin;ichi Ito of Toshiba DM Co. digital AV division DAV product planning department)" with the weight feeling is adopted on the design side. It provides with an electric front panel made of aluminum and the aluminum insulator, etc.It is said that the chassis structure assumes a dual structure of the main/sub-frame composition with 1mm steel board, and has achieved a high-quality recording/reproduction performance by strengthening the power supply.
It equips with the terminal HDMI, and scaler chip "ABT1018" made of the anchor bay technology is built into. It corresponds to 1080p output of HDMI. In addition, video DAC adopts over sampling DAC the HD 4 time 14bit/297MHz made of Analog Devices, and has strengthened the performance of the output of an analog image of the D4 output etc.
It is said that it equips with three dimension Y/C separation circuit and super-high speed OP amplifiers/LC type Antieiriasfiltar etc. of GRT and 10bit/54MHz for the analog ground, and a high-quality graphic processing from the input image to the output has been achieved.
Four DAC of 24bit/192kHz is built into, and 24bit/192kHz processing is always executed on the tone quality side regardless of the input data rate. The tone quality improvement is attempted by adopting a high-quality power supply besides providing with a special Crystal mastering clock and the clock generator. Moreover, tone quality has been improved by "Mega-resolution parallel DAC system" that uses four all DAC when the stereo is played.
The outputs other than HDMI provide with the terminal i.LINK only for the D-VHS dubbing in addition to D4×1 and 1 and 3 and 3 and 1 and 3 and 1 and optical, digital output × digital ×1 analogue ×5.1ch analog voice × composite ×S image × component ×2ch which it is coaxial by two systems. It non-corresponds to the move Inn. The input is 1, is 3, is 3, analog voice × D1×1 composite × S image × and DV input ×1.
It equips with the network function, and it corresponds to the DLNA guideline. The usage is undecided though it equips with USB and the enhancing terminal of this shape. Power consumption is 133W. In externals size, it is 457×408×159mm(width × depth × height), and weight is 15.2kg.

Looks glorious, but I'm confused on one issue: how do you get an HD signal to the unit?
Using Babelfish's translator, it appears that the video only inputs are composite video, S-video, Co-Ax, or Firewire. No component input, DVI, or HDMI inputs.
That would imply (to me) that you couldn't run an HD signal from a D* or E* box, or many cable boxes (unless they have firewire output enabled).

That's pretty standard, really; if you want to record HD material, you pretty much have to use Firewire. You cannot record from satellite. Your cable company has to make a Firewire-capable box available to you upon request, but I don't believe every box has to have Firewire capability. (Meaning that they may offer a standard STB with Firewire and a DVR without, so if you want to be able to do both, you may need two boxes.)

Guess you guys have never seen a big component before? That's half the size of the current Denon 580x receiver, get real. It's only as big as my DVDp, although almost twice as heavy.
I'd rather have the girl. Probably less expensive.

I just love it when everytime someone says "ooh, it's so big!"
I might have to get this one!
Incidentally - someone at AVS says they spoke to Toshiba at a show while they were looking at this unit and Toshiba confirmed that TruHD 5.1 decoding is coming with a firmware update. This would be very good news indeed.

In a page from the BD handbook...
http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/sil...y/15025268.htm
TOKYO (AP) - Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it will postpone the sale of the first recorder for HD DVD high-definition video discs because of a production delay.
The new recorder, the RD-A1, had been slated to go on sale Friday, but the release will be pushed back to July 27, the Tokyo-based electronics maker said in a release.
The new machine combines an HD DVD burner with a one-terabyte hard disk and can record and store up to 130 hours of high-definition broadcasts.
The product is a key element of Toshiba's battle against rival Sony Corp. to establish the standard for next-generation DVD technology. Sony and its allies are pushing an alternative technology called Blu-ray.
Toshiba launched HD DVD players in Japan in March, and in the United States in April. Sony plans to begin selling personal computers equipped with Blu-ray drives later this month.
Toshiba said last month the RD-A1 recorder will carry a suggested price tag of $3,470. The electronics maker hopes to sell 10,000 recorders by the end of 2006, company spokeswoman Junko Furuta said. It was unclear when the product will be launched overseas.
Sony has been selling Blu-ray recorders since 2003 in Japan, but prices have been high and consumer adoption limited.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray can deliver dazzling high-definition video and can store much more data than today's DVDs, but the formats are incompatible.

I'd pay $1500 for that. Fuck the format war... I'd pay $1500 for that today and take my chances. Hell, if you're using a Comcast HD DVR, your shelling out about $15/month anyway, for something with no where near the capacity or features. I'm definitely keeping an eye on this...
