In many ways it's very similar to MOO. Colonize planets, design and build ships, etc.
I've only been playing for a day but I'm liking it.

I never tried MOO3, I heard it was too much like a "spread sheet with graphics"
Galactic Civilizations 2 is a bit like MOO2 in that star systems can have more than one habitable planet. Also in systems with more than one planet more than one civ can have a colony in that system

I have Civilization 4 and absolutely love that. How does GalCiv 2 compare to Civ4? Is it the same thing, just set in space, or are there enough differences that it would be worth getting both?

I would, but I like turn based strategy games a lot

major difference from civ4 is the ability to customize your ships

One more good thing about it: no annoying copy protection. Take it with you on your laptop, or any of your multiple PCs (if you're like me) or wherever.
This game is getting my money, instead of the Starforce-protected Heroes of Might and Magic 5.

yeah, nice to not have to have the cd in the drive, and not have to use a no-cd crack to do it
I finally decided to start adding the extra hull pieces that are just for looks, and was able to build a ship that looks like a federation design from Star Trek. I'll get a screen shot later
and if you go to the planet screen and click the details button there's some occasionally funny stuff written in the planet description or in the interview from one of the citizens
oh man, in a thread about getting Shatner to read the tech descriptions like Nimoy does in Civ4

I had an opportunity to dive into this game over the weekend and love it. Started as the Humans in a tiny galaxy on the fool setting and obviuosly it was a piece of cake. Been trying to focus on different aspects on these initial games and learn. It is definately not intuiative on how to invade planets, build ships, utilize starbases, optimize weapons, understanding the government options, etc. Unfortunately I didn't have access online to access information so I was stuck with the game and the instruction manual. I am getting the hang of it.
Is it me or do the weapons seem a little boring as compared to the options available in the original MOO?

I've updated my version to 1.5 (the one before the Dark Avatar expansion) and have been enjoying it again. It has aged very well and after I get more games under my belt I'm going to buy the DA expansion and probably will buy the newest expansion announced. I always used to play this game on the tiny, small or medium sized galaxy to limit time spent but have recently tried the large and huge. They allow you to truly build a large civilization and research a majority of the technologies and I belive get the most out of the game. I'm quite comfortable on the normal level but will ratchet it up a notch or 2 and see how I do.

Last time I played for a while I played with the Star Trek mod installed
I've yet to finish out the tech tree in either the trek mod or stock game, and have yet to play the plotline in the stock game

I picked up a brand new multipack of Dread Lords + Dark Avatar on Ebay for $10.01 total last week. It still had the Best Buy sticker for $39.99 on it. They must have sold all of their unsold games to the reseller I bought it from. So far, it's been a really good game.
I hate reading manuals, so I just jumped in and learned as I went along. I won my first game in a small universe and have just started the largest universe available. Still playing on normal (easy?).
I had some problems with this game when I ugraded to Vista SP1 last weekend, but after downloading the updated versions of these games plus the updated nVidia drivers, it is working really well.
I look forward to playing many hundred more hours with this game and then Dark Avatar. And then I will probably download the lastest expansion pack.

so I installed this on my new pc to get into playing it again and the star trek mod I was using seems to be broken
I can't get it to give the federation their unique tech
worked fine previously
the one website I found for the mod seems to be dead

came across a fix
http://forums.galciv2.com/348190

Apparently, for each race created, the game automatically creates an XML file that is very similar to the RaceConfig.xml files used in the game's DATA file folders. These files are called "<whatever you used as a Display Name>" and have a RACECONFIG file type and are stored in Documents/My Games/GalCiv2. The same place that the saved games are stored. This is not located in any of the game's files, it is in separate from that. Which is why it took so long for me to find it.
Apparently the game uses the whatever.RACECONFIG file type by default and does not bother to look at RaceConfig.xml files that you create for mods if a whatever.RACECONFIG file type document exists. In order to get the game to look at the RaceConfig.xml file, you must delete the whatever.RACECONFIG file from the GalCiv2 folder in Documents/My Games. (I didn't delete them, just moved them to a different folder.)
(Sorry for such a detailed response, but I saw a lot of questions similar to this as I waded thru the past two yrs of posts. Hopefully this response will help someone.)
