Alice In Chains Return. It's Official
artist: alice in chains date: 02/22/2006 category: general music news

antiMusic reports: the admin of Jerry Cantrell's official website posted an update about the Alice In Chains reunion. Although he doesn't spill the beans about who will be taking over vocal duties for the late Layne Staley, he does confirm that the band will reunite for the Nova Rock Festival and drops a hint that more shows may be booked. Here's his posting:

"I hate to keep on saying, this but as most of you have heard Alice will be performing at Nova Rock in Austria. This is true. Alice is back.

"Europe is a long way to go for just one show, so I feel that we are going to have a lot more to do.

"Because this is Europe and a big festival don't count on any special Alice tickets but you never know what the future brings.

"Let me explain why things went down the way they went down. It was not the way we wanted it to happen. The festival promoter secured a bunch of really big bands like Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Alice. The promoter decided to have a big press conference on Monday. We had not finished securing the 'business side' of the show by the time Monday rolled around. Because Monday was President's Day, our office was closed and we could not make a decission regarding releasing the info to you guys. Our European agent, because our office was closed made an executive decision to release the show info. We fully support his choice but could not say anything untill we spoke to him to get the full stroy and due to the time difference and travel we could not make the announcement untill just now.

"Guys, please remember that nothing is official unless it comes from our office. We like to surprise you but sometimes that is not always possible.

Jerry [Cantrell, guitar], Mike [Inez, bass], Sean [Kinney, drums] and the managment team are doing our best to keep you guys informed. You mean a lot to the guys and they want you to know that.

"I feel the rumblings of more stuff coming down the road."

Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley died on Apr. 5, 2002 from a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Staley was found dead two weeks later, surrounded by intravenous drug paraphernalia in his Seattle apartment. The death certificate reads Staley's death resulted from "an acute intoxication due to the combined effects of opiate (heroin) and cocaine." The death was classified as "accidental."

As previously reported, Comes With The Fall vocalist/guitarist and member of Jerry Cantrell's touring band William DuVall has been tapped to sing lead vocals with Alice In Chains at the taping of an episode of VH1 Classic's "Decades Rock Live!", a tribute to Heart that will take place March 10 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It is not presently clear if DuVall will be joining the group on any of the other dates that are currently being scheduled.

I agree.

Why are all of my all-time favorite groups trying to make me hate them?

Even though Cantrell did the bulk of the songwriting in Alice, Layne is a hole that cannot be filled both with vocals & songwriting contributions. Just listen to Cantrell's solo offerings to see how blatant that is.

Please fail miserably.

I'd prefer a tribute album. let the live thing go. get some peers(and bands obviously influenced by them, cough Godsmack) together for a tribute. Hell it would be an excuse to get Soundgarden, the Pumpkins, & Rage back together.

Alice in Chains is probably one of my top 5 bands ever, but the bottom line is, without Layne...I STAY AWAY!

Well, Jerry sang quite a bit of the material himself, so why not just go the rest of the way? Although Layne had more "growl", they actually sounded very similar.

I guess Jerry's solo stuff and cover band, The Cardboard Vampyres, weren't paying the bills.

I know, I know... "But AC/DC and VAN HALEN were able to find new life with new singers!", you say,, but at least that happened early to mid-career and they soldiered on with new material instead of resting on their laurels and sticking to standards to cash in on the tour circuit and name legacy. Shame on The Doors, AIC, Queen, INXS, Journey, The Misfits, et al.

Has the music scene become like the movies? We need to have "remake" bands now?

Can't they find a new "lead" singer and call themselves something else?

I'm sure hardcore fans would follow reguardless if they used the AIC name or not (if the music was good).

And i hope they don't go the INXS route and find some guy who sounds almost exactly like the previous singer.

To be fair, Jerry wrote over 80% of all AIC material and sang on a lot of them.

It's a great idea.

Besides, it's only one show.

I'm not going to blame the rest of the band for Layne being a complete douchebag and killing himself. There is obvious demand for the band to come back. However, it might be a precursor to Rock Star: AIC.

They could change the name to "Alice in Dire Financial Straights Due to Dried Up Residual Royalty Payments" but then the acro is ADFSDDURRP and that just isn't so cool.

Quoting Jerry in the OP's article, "Europe is a long way to go for just one show, so I feel that we are going to have a lot more to do."

It's not just one show.

I'm still pleased whatever they do.

It's still AIC.

It's not like GNR where it's just Axl, they still have 3 original members left. That's AIC enough for me.

AIC is still one of my favorite bands.

Why did they stop making records after Tripod? Did Layne just become so much of a junkie that the other guys didn't want to even talk to him anymore?

I don't know how they could list his death as accidental...

For a tsunami benefit show, the remaining members had guest vocalists sing Layne's parts. Mostly Pat Lachman, but also Maynard James Keenan and Wes Scantlin. I've got a recording of it, and it seems pretty cool.

I don't have as much of a problem with this as I did with groups like the Doors. As others have said, Cantrell was the driving force behind AIC. I'd probably go and see the show.

Everyone keeps saying this but I have to call bullshit.

Out of curiosity, I went thru their 5 studio albums. Of 47 listed songs, Cantrell was listed as sole writer of lyrics and music for 21 of those. Layne was listed as the co-writer (usually as the main lyricist) of 23 songs. Layne had 3 credits as sole writer of both music & lyrics.

Granted Cantrell wrote all the music but music ain't shit without good lyrics to go with it. Just ask Elton John.

So Layne was involved in 55% of all of AIC's song creations plus lead vocalist on nearly all of their songs. How anyone can see that as a minor loss is beyond me.

And if you want to compare the solo route, please check into Mad Season's one disc versus Cantrell's solo releases. I would put the Mad Season release (titled Above) on par with any AIC release (or even better than some). I wouldn't do the same with Cantrell's cds. Staley is listed with writing the lyrics soley to every song on that disc except one that was co-written with Mark Lanegan. The entire band is credited as writers of the music with Staley in the lead mention.

Not to go on a rant but I get tired of hearing people always say that Cantrell was the talented one in the group and it was he that made them successful.
