Re: Pig (2021) - S: Nicolas Cage

This was pretty damn good, especially Cage's performance as everyone has pointed out.

Just curious - was I the only one that kept thinking about 'The Fisher King' while watching this?

Re: No Sudden Move (2021, D: Soderbergh) S: Cheadle, Del Toro, Hamm, Harbour, Liotta

Yeah, I'm one of those people. It kept taking me out of the film every time there was a panning shot. It was distracting from getting involved with the storyline and characters.
I'd give it a decent...

Re: Plan B (2021, D: Morales) S: Kuhoo Verma, Victoria Moroles

Watched this tonight, its was pretty good. Strong performances from the two leads really helped it stand above the average teen road-trip comedy. ***/****
One tiny logic complaint - couldn't they...

Re: METALLICA: The Black Album (Remastered) - 09/10/21

There's also going to be a eight-part podcast with the band members and others, talking about the making of the album. Set for an August release, I believe.

Re: Ned Beatty beloved character actor dead at 83

The first time I went to London was 2002, and I saw a production of 'Cat On A Hot Tin Roof' at the West End. It starred Brendan Fraser (huge star at the time), Frances O'Connor and Ned Beatty. Fraser...

Re: Mammoth WVH

Not amazing, but not bad at all. Reminds me of The Pretty Reckless, another band I think is pretty decent.

Re: The Go-Go's Documentary on Showtime (Premieres 8/1/20)

I read that book recently as well, it was pretty great. I really like that it wasn't just his voice, but recollections from a wide variety of musicians.

Re: Riders of Justice (2021, D: Jensen) - S: Mads Mikkelsen

I've already watched this, and it was pretty good. It's a strange hybrid of comedy, black comedy and drama. It doesn't always walk that line perfectly, some of the transitions were a bit awkward. But...

Re: Shadow and Bone (Netflix) - Fantasy series from the writer of Arrival & Bird Box - Premieres 4/23/21

Just finished this, a few random thoughts:

- overall not bad (I watched all 8, and I'm not afraid to abandon something)
- good world-building, a little confusing at first but it all came...

Re: The 2021 Oscars Discussion Thread

I didn't watch last night (hardly ever do, just see clips later on). But they removed all the clips, and all the musical performances, and it was still over 3 hours long? Yikes.

re: Stowaway (2021) -- S: Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson -- Netflix

I felt this had really strong performances, but was too poorly written to be anything but barely average. Too many perfectly timed coincidences, too many unanswered questions. Wanted it to be better...

Re: Jim Steinman, hit songwriter of rock epics, dead at 73

I know its nit-picking, but Todd Rundgren actually produced the first 'Bat Out of Hell' album, not Steinman.

Re: Spontaneous (2020, D: Duffield) S: Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel

Just watched this tonight. Pretty much agree here. Like the movie a lot, especially the first half which nailed the dark comedy aspects. Second half became more of a coming-of-age story, which was...

Re: Resident Alien (SyFy) -- S: Alan Tudyk -- Premieres 1/27/21

This show is pretty fun, and has some great off-kilter writing.

Added bonus - the actress playing Max's...

Re: Debris (NBC) -- S: Jonathan Tucker -- Sci-Fi drama from the Producer of Fringe -- Premieres 3/1/21

Like most of you, went into this because of the 'Fringe' connection, and loved the 'X-Files'. But pretty disappointing. I thought the male lead character (Jonathan Tucker) was particularly weak. And...

re: The Nevers (HBO) -- created by Joss Whedon -- premieres 4/11/21

So this is like X-Men? But all women, and set in a couple hundred years ago? Meh.

Re: One Night in Miami (2020, D: Regina King) S: L. Odom Jr., A. Hodge, K. Ben-Adir, E. Goree

I enjoyed this as well. I did think that there were a few times that the dialogue felt more like a political roundtable than real conversation, a bit stage-y. (And yes, it was adapted from a play.)...

Re: Nomadland (2020) D: Chlo Zhao S : Frances McDormand

I thought this was amazing, especially the performance from McDormand. It reminded a bit of another movie I loved, 'The Florida Project'. Both show an unflinching and non-judgmental view of a portion...

Re: Best (most enjoyable) concert experience

I went to that show! Must have been '86? I was a manager at Strawberries at the time, and our ticket seller hooked me up. While it was cool to see Prince in a small club, I kinda like the Garden show...

Re: Recommend me an App to replace Google Play Music

I'm not an expert, but I use Spotify. You can add local folders to your library, which is great for all the hard-to-find/rare/local bands that aren't online anywhere.
The paid version is pretty...

Re: Bacurau (Nighthawk) - 2020 - Brazilian sci-fi/western/thriller? s: Snia Braga, Udo Kier

Saw it earlier this year, thought it was great. I love how it jumps genres, you never know where its going. But enjoyable throughout!

Re: Worst (least enjoyable) concert experiences?

I saw that double-bill at Great Woods outside of Boston. Terrible show. I had decent seats, but sound was still a muddled mess. And Bob kept changing up the songs while the band tried helplessly to...
