Forget about NiCd and go with NiMh batteries. About $10 or more for just 4 AA but they rock. You'll need a special charger, can get a charger with 4 AA for under $20 then buy extra batteries.

Not sure about other makes, but the Panasonics do lock to full with 480p. Lucky you getting to use an RP56 with an HD display, I'm stuck with a JVC.
